In 2018, Mega Man 11 hit the shelves, swiftly earning its place among the top games in Capcom’s extended series. This latest installment caught many off guard due to its impressive graphics, enjoyable gameplay, and surprisingly affordable price point. Remarkably, it also became one of the highest-selling titles within the franchise. However, instead of capitalizing on this success by creating another Mega Man game, Capcom decided to move forward with a new Monster Hunter project.
It’s been quite a letdown not having any new games released since then, as number 11 was truly exceptional – our personal favorite in this series. It seemed to perfectly cater to every type of Mega Fan, which is no small feat given the popularity of Resident Evil and Street Fighter. A bit more recognition for the Blue Bomber wouldn’t go amiss.
Following the 9th and 10th games reverting to 8-bit graphics, Mega Man 11 marked a shift for the series by adopting a 2.5D style. While it may not be the most visually impressive platformer, Capcom’s Mega Man is rendered effectively, as are his companions. Characters like Roll, Dr. Light, Dr. Wily, and the standard bosses that Mega Man fights all have distinctive designs that convey a fair amount of personality.
Regarding their personal histories, this game provides insights into both Wily and Light. The narrative commences with a prelude depicting a young Wily and Light debating over a revolutionary technology that could potentially enhance robots in the future. However, Light chose not to support it, which ultimately strained their relationship irreversibly. Later, Wily employed this technology to empower his new bosses for another attempt at world domination. In response, Light decides to bestow this power on Mega Man instead.
The main tale unfolds, culminating in the most significant aspect of Mega Man 11 – the Double Gear system. This innovation gives Mega Man control over time, enabling him to slow down for smoother platforming or delay enemy attacks. Alternatively, he can use it to power through and demolish everything in sight. However, excessive usage causes Mega Man to overheat, necessitating careful strategy from players when employing this feature.
In this new version, supervisors can activate the Double Gear system when facing off against Mega Man in battles, adding a strategic element to these encounters. However, using their vulnerability weapons for shooting remains the most effective way to win. For those eager to test their skills, they can opt to use the Double Gear system. It’s worth noting that every boss can be defeated with your Mega Buster, so players won’t have flashbacks of the X6 era’s High Max fight.

In Mega Man 11, players aren’t bound to weapons obtained from defeating bosses; instead, they can enhance their abilities by gathering bolts. This beloved aspect from earlier Mega Man games remains beneficial, enabling players to buy Energy Tanks for health restoration, additional lives, weapon power-ups, and more. Although it isn’t the most difficult game in the series, it is still quite tough, and investing in these upgrades can make things a bit easier.
Mega Man 11 is a game with many appealing aspects, and it’s unfortunate that Capcom hasn’t produced a follow-up since then. The game seems to have set up an excellent base for future installments, but unfortunately, it appears we won’t get another one. It’s possible that Capcom could be working hard to come up with innovative ideas to revitalize the Blue Bomber character, but given it’s been seven years, it seems improbable.
