J.K. Rowling References Easter in Response to ‘F_ck JKR’ Chants at U.K. Parliament Protest

A multitude assembled in London’s Parliament Square to voice their disapproval against a U.K. Supreme Court decision from April 16, 2025, that redefined the term “woman” in a way that excludes transgender women. This court verdict, which was unanimous, has implications for various rulings, one of them being a 2018 Scottish law mandating at least 50% female representation on the boards of public bodies. Previously, this legislation had encompassed transgender females.

As a strong supporter of transgender rights, I’ve been deeply troubled by the growing opposition towards this community. Last Saturday, April 19th, activists and their allies rallied at an emergency protest. The air was filled with cries of “Fuck J.K. Rowling,” a response to her reported financial support for Campaigners For Women Scotland’s legal challenge. On hearing news of the protest chants, she responded on social media, “Only a thousand? #disappointed,” followed by a reminder that “I get the same royalties whether you read them or burn them. Enjoy your marshmallows!” – a reference to Easter Sunday.

The demonstration occurred soon after Warner Bros. unveiled the adult cast for the upcoming Harry Potter television series, which is adapted from J.K. Rowling’s immensely popular books that have sold over 600 million copies worldwide. The series will span seven seasons, each corresponding to a book, with Francesca Gardiner (Succession) serving as showrunner and Mark Mylod directing some episodes (Game of Thrones). However, the casting of John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore has faced criticism due to him being an American, as previous portrayals of Dumbledore have been by British actors such as Richard Harris, Michael Gambon and Jude Law.

As a passionate fan, I’m expressing my stance similar to many public figures who have openly criticized a controversial decision, subtly yet clearly alluding to J.K. Rowling, in a now-deleted Instagram story followed by another post.
