In a remarkable turn of events, the horror film titled “Sinners” outperformed the third weekend of the Jack Black and Jason Momoa-starrer “A Minecraft Movie,” a popular video game adaptation that has already amassed significant box office earnings in 2025. With potential for a billion-dollar gross, “A Minecraft Movie” currently holds the second spot among the highest-grossing films of the year so far. Michael B. Jordan, who was previously seen in “Just Mercy,” takes on a unique challenge as twin brothers in “Sinners.” This is the fifth collaboration between Jordan and director Ryan Coogler, following “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed,” “Black Panther,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Despite Michael B. Jordan portraying two characters, the rest of the Sinners cast is impressively star-studded as well. Co-starring alongside Jordan are Hailee Steinfeld, who earned an Oscar nomination for her role in True Grit, Delroy Lindo, a Tony nominee with recent roles such as those in The Harder They Fall and Da 5 Bloods, Jack O’Connell, who played Louis Zamperini in Unbroken, Wunmi Mosaku, recognized for her work in shows like Lovecraft Country, Loki, and Deadpool & Wolverine, and Li Jun Li, a seasoned TV actress known for appearances on Fox’s The Exorcist and ABC’s Quantico.
Sinners Made $61 Million Worldwide In its Opening Weekend
It Took No. 1 At The Domestic Box Office
To start off, the film titled “Sinners” had a successful launch by generating buzz at the global box office. As per the estimates released by Variety on Sunday morning, it is expected to end its opening weekend with a domestic total of $45.6 million. Including the $15.4 million earned internationally, this brings the horror movie’s worldwide debut total to $61 million. This figure represents the highest opening weekend earnings for an original movie in the 2020s thus far.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that just three days into its release, Sinners has managed to crack the list of highest-grossing films of 2025! Currently sitting at No. 11 on the global chart, it’s close but not quite in the Top 10 yet. The Top 10 includes movies like The Amateur ($64.3 million) and Ne Zha 2 ($1.898 billion), with Den of Thieves: Pantera ($57.3 million), Flight Risk ($44.4 million), and Companion ($36.7 million) being some of the films that Sinners has already surpassed, despite their longer runs in theaters.
Sinners Took No. 1 Over A Minecraft Movie
It Prematurely Ended Minecraft’s Streak Atop The Chart
Another success I contributed to was dethroning “A Minecraft Movie” from its No.1 spot on the charts, a feat achieved after only two weekends. Despite stiff competition from fresh releases like the 20th anniversary re-release of “Pride & Prejudice,” as well as established titles such as the animated faith-based hit “The King of Kings,” the Alex Garland movie “Warfare,” and Rami Malek’s action film “The Amateur,” we managed to claim the top spot. Here is the full domestic box office Top 5 for the weekend of April 18:
1.
2. A Minecraft Movie
3. The King of Kings
4. Warfare
5. The Amateur & Pride & Prejudice (tied)
# | Title | 3-Day Total | Cumulative (Domestic) |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Sinners | $45.6 million | $45.6 million (weekend 1) |
2 | A Minecraft Movie | $41.3 million | $344.6 million (weekend 3) |
3 | The King of Kings | $17.2 million | $45.3 million (weekend 2) |
4 | The Amateur | $7.2 million | $27.3 million (weekend 2) |
5 | Warfare | $4.855 million | $17.1 million (weekend 2) |
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but be captivated by the overwhelming praise for the chilling film, “Sinners.” Not only did it receive an exceptional Certified Fresh rating of 98% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but during its opening weekend, audiences awarded it an unprecedented A CinemaScore. This makes it the highest-rated horror movie in history – a fact that undeniably piques my interest!
Beyond this, the partnership between filmmaker Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan has demonstrated impressive success at the box office. Their collaborative efforts have broken numerous box office records, with “Black Panther” standing out as the highest-grossing February release domestically and also the highest-grossing film directed by a black director. As such, their latest project, despite being an original movie not tied to a well-known franchise, may have been just as appealing to audiences due to this proven duo’s track record.
How Sinners’ Opening Weekend Compares To Other R-Rated Horror Movies
It Has Had One Of The Genre’s Best Debuts
Beyond taking the lead on the local box office for the weekend, the film starring Michael B. Jordan has achieved the ninth-largest domestic debut of all time for an R-rated horror movie. Here’s a look at the top ten R-rated horror movies with the most successful opening weekends domestically:

Movies rated R, due to age restrictions, often earn less than those rated PG-13 or lower at the box office. However, the film Sinners has managed to make it into the Top 10, suggesting that it resonated strongly with adult audiences – a feat rarely achieved by original horror movies. Interestingly, apart from Jordan Peele’s Us, which had one of the highest debuts for an R-rated horror movie, Sinners is the only other non-franchise film on this chart.

Sinners Reportedly Cost $90 Million To Make – Will That Hurt It?
It Has A Long Way To Go In Order To Break Even
Despite its significant box office earnings, the new horror film titled Sinners could encounter a substantial challenge due to its reported production budget of $90 million. With cinemas taking half of ticket sales and marketing expenses not included in production budgets, films typically need to recoup about 2.5 times their budget just to break even at the box office. Given this, the film might need to earn approximately $225 million to meet its financial goals, a figure that could prove challenging for Sinners, especially following a record-breaking opening weekend.
For Sinners to reach the break-even point, it must earn five times its initial global box office earnings by the end of its run. This is an extremely unlikely scenario for any movie, especially an R-rated horror film. Yet, out of the eight R-rated horror movies that had larger opening weekends domestically, six went on to gross over $225 million in total. If Sinners can leverage its exceptional CinemaScore to create a powerful word-of-mouth marketing campaign, becoming profitable is not entirely out of the question.
