Fans have appreciated since the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe how it incorporates references to the original comics that inspired it. This has resulted in numerous Easter eggs hidden across the movies and TV series within the franchise. While it’s exciting to spot connections to the comics, I especially enjoy instances where these hints are introduced in one MCU film and later pay off in another. A viral video on social media showcased such an example, making me wonder about more examples like this.
What Specific MCU Payoff Moment Is Covered In The Video?
By watching the Marvel movies sequentially, you’ll notice significant instances foreshadowed or set up for future development, which may not always be immediately clear. For instance, a humorous scene from the 2015 movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron” featuring Steve Rogers serves as a prime example. During a celebration among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, several characters attempt to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, with Steve coming closest but still failing – a feat he later achieves in a different movie, as depicted in the video below:
Watching Marvel movies sequentially reveals key moments that hint at future events. For example, a funny scene from “Avengers: Age of Ultron” with Steve Rogers is a good illustration of this. At a heroes’ party, they all try to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and Steve gets the closest but doesn’t succeed yet – a feat he accomplishes later in another movie as shown in the video below:

In the final act of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”, user superhero_fix notes that Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, does pick up and wield the enchanted Mjolnir to battle Thanos. Frankly, I think everyone watching was taken aback when Captain America managed to lift the hammer. There were discussions afterward about his worthiness, but regardless of personal opinions, it was an exciting scene.
While some might find these returns trivial, they can indeed be powerfully utilized. In my opinion, the Mjolnir moment stands among the most impactful payoffs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history. However, there are numerous other instances that deserve equal recognition (pun not intended).
Let’s Talk About Some Other Great Payoffs In The MCU

Upcoming Marvel Movies: Release Dates For Phase 5 And Phase 6
Over time, Marvel Studios’ expansive media empire has often played a long-term strategy. Memorable examples from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) involve its villains. For instance, after the conclusion of “Captain America: The First Avenger”, the destiny of Red Skull remained unclear for almost seven years, until he was disclosed to be on Vormir in “Avengers: Infinity War”. Similarly, I eagerly waited close to a decade for the genuine Mandarin, leader of the Ten Rings Organization, to appear following that hint in “All Hail the King” One-Shot. Thankfully, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” finally delivered these answers.
In the film, Endgame, there are heart-wrenching scenes, as well as some delightfully satisfying resolutions – some more conspicuous than others. One of my favorite moments is a brief appearance by Harley, the boy who helped Tony Stark in Iron Man 3, during Stark’s funeral. Another subtle tribute occurs when Steve Rogers calls his friend Sam Wilson a “good man,” before returning the Infinity Stones to their proper places in time. This is a nod back to Dr. Abraham Erskine telling Steve to stay a “good man” just before he took the super soldier serum in The First Avenger.

Indeed, it is Steve’s strong belief in Sam that leads him to choose Sam as his successor for the role of Captain America. In turn, Sam’s standalone movie titled “Brave New World” would subtly reference some elements from “The Incredible Hulk” series by featuring certain characters (though not Bruce Banner himself).
The tissue connecting the events as previously mentioned can provide depth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if it sometimes gets complex. To put it simply, I wouldn’t give up the thrill of witnessing Captain America lift Mjolnir or the Red Skull reappearing for anything.
