Why Brett Goldstein Is Comparing ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Renewal to a Dead Cat

The surprise Ted Lasso season four renewal has Brett Goldstein‘s head spinning a bit.

In a recent conversation on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, the actor-writer-producer, who portrays Roy Kent, disclosed that he is currently working in the writers’ room for the upcoming revival of the Apple TV+ series. He likened this development to a cat miraculously returning from the grave.

Goldstein shared a thought-provoking story: “During university, I had a friend who owned a beloved cat. Unfortunately, this feline companion was hit by a car and passed away. They chose to bury the cat in their garden. As a child, my friend was devastated and spent days in bed crying and praying for the cat’s return. To his surprise, the cat did reappear – but it turned out they had buried someone else’s pet. This tale has stayed with me ever since.

As an ardent admirer, I find myself often pondering over the thoughts of this extraordinary creator: “Indeed, it’s no surprise to me that such ideas as death not being real would drive a man to the brink of insanity. His beliefs are undeniably bizarre, for he holds convictions that he can resurrect the deceased.

Essentially, Goldstein finds himself in a similar situation as a child, since the creators of Ted Lasso – Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly – originally intended for the show to last just three seasons. However, after a year of conjecture following the season three finale in May 2023, Apple TV+ recently announced that a fourth season will be produced.

Goldstein chuckled and replied, ‘Just like we laid it to rest, we mourned, we held a farewell ceremony. Are you suggesting we could resurrect it?’ That’s too great a power.

Actors Sudeikis, Goldstein, Waddingham, Temple, and Swift are returning for the fourth season of the show, with Sudeikis hinting at what’s ahead: “In the upcoming season, the team at AFC Richmond will learn to take a leap before looking, finding that no matter where they land, it’s exactly the right place for them.
