TKO Levels Up WWE With Major Buy: Mexican Lucha Libre Heavyweight AAA

TKO Group Holdings is broadening its horizons, as one of its notable assets, the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), has recently announced the purchase of the popular Mexican wrestling league, AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración).

At Wrestlemania 41 over the weekend, Paul Levesque, WWE’s chief content officer, along with Filippo Fasja (chairman of Fillip), Marisela Peña (AAA), and Dorian Roldán Peña announced a new deal. This groundbreaking collaboration took place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Details regarding the agreement between WWE and AAA’s parent company, Filip, have not been made public, but the WWE assures that the Pena family, who have run AAA since its inception in 1992, will remain part of the operations. The promotions are set to co-host an event titled “World’s Collide” in Los Angeles on June 7, featuring talent from both organizations.

Notable WWE personalities like Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, and Penta have stepped into the ring for the first time in AAA. Lucha Libre is a unique form of wrestling characterized by masked performers (luchadores) who excel in fast-paced acrobatic moves.

Levesque expressed his pride in working alongside the Peña family as they venture into a new phase, given AAA’s deep-rooted cultural history and fanatical supporters. With WWE’s worldwide resources merging with AAA’s remarkable tradition, we eagerly anticipate a thrilling future brimming with fresh prospects.

In the midst of an expansion drive, company TKO has secured a deal for AAA, following previous acquisitions like Professional Bull Riders, On Location, and IMG from Endeavor, their primary owner. Additionally, TKO has announced plans to enter the boxing industry through a partnership with HE Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority. At this point, specifics regarding the boxing venture are yet to be finalized.

Hugo López-Velarde, a co-founder and Co-CEO of Fillip, expressed enthusiasm about working with WWE and TKO in this new project aimed at safeguarding AAA for its fans and pushing the business to greater heights.
