Paul Smith and Design Within Reach Outfit the Miles C. Bates “Wave House”

Design Within Reach (DWR) has reimagined the iconic Miles C. Bates “Wave House” in Palm Desert as a tranquil haven inspired by Paul Smith, as part of an agreement with the exclusive vacation rental service, Boutique.

We are thrilled to announce the debut of DWR Presents: The Paul Smith Collection – a unique assortment of indoor and outdoor furniture, born from the enduring partnership between the acclaimed British designer and Maharam. To showcase this collaboration, we have set up an architectural exhibit featuring limited-edition items, ranging from the iconic Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair to Eero Saarinen’s Womb Chair, reupholstered in Maharam textiles adorned with Paul Smith’s distinctive patterns.

Originally created by Walter S. White in 1955, this mid-century modern masterpiece is recognized for its roof reminiscent of the San Jacinto mountains nearby. This historical landmark within Palm Desert was constructed as a vacation retreat and sculptor’s studio for Bates, who turned it into a lively centerpoint in the Coachella Valley. Interestingly, the “Wave House,” which had not been open to the public until February 2020 following its restoration by Stayner Architects, was finally made accessible.

Omar Nobil, senior vice president and creative director at DWR, stated that the Paul Smith Collection is incredibly adaptable, capable of fitting various locations and architectural designs. Yet, we opted to debut the experiential part of the collection in ‘Wave House’ due to its unique and daring design that mirrors the collection.

I must say, the unique allure of this place lies in its daringly quirky rooftop design, which beautifully contrasts against the breathtaking backdrop of the arid desert landscape.

Effective immediately, starting April 21st, the “Wave House” is up for reservations via our platform. You can also browse and purchase items from the Paul Smith Collection directly on our site. Have a peek at the interior images provided.
