After spending five years on the market, the PlayStation 5 remains one of the most powerful gaming consoles available today. However, with its fifth anniversary approaching, there are rumors suggesting that Sony might be starting to look ahead towards the next major PlayStation model.
There’s a growing buzz, and it seems that people are speculating that the upcoming PlayStation could possibly include a portable variant. Hang on—how could this be? Under what circumstances? What’s the reasoning behind it?
It Started a Year Ago
Discussions about a movable PlayStation 6 started approximately a year back, triggered by hardware tipster Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID). However, due to Sony’s famously strict internal security, rumors regarding the PS6 have turned into an annual event for leakers and tech aficionados – even though there has been no substantial proof to support these claims.
As per MLID reports, there’s a device under development that shares a similar design to the “Vita 2”. In contrast to the PlayStation Portable, which depends solely on Wi-Fi streaming for its functioning, this upcoming portable system is said not to require a continuous internet connection to operate.
MLID asserts that the potential device might support gaming directly. In a YouTube video, he hints at a possible 18 Compute Unit (CU) GPU setup for the “Vita 2”. Although it’s less powerful, it can reliably run games.
But Is It Real?
Kepler, another reliable source from the hardware sector, has added his voice to the discussions about the rumored PS6 Portable. He’s been engaged in several talks surrounding this topic.
In simpler terms, according to Kepler, this feature might enable playback of all PlayStation 4 games without any issues and, theoretically, some PS5 games with updates similar to the Pro version. However, for individual optimization of each PS5 game, developers would need to get involved.
This seems to indicate that Sony could be considering the development of two different types of gaming platforms: one for those seeking a powerful home console experience and another for those who prefer portability. However, it’s unlikely we’ll see a system that combines both functions like the Nintendo Switch 2, as it appears they are leaning towards separate consoles. My guess is that they will go with two individual consoles, with the portable one serving as an additional option. I’m wagering on this dual-console approach.
What Now?

Regarding the rumored existence of the PlayStation 6 Portable, it doesn’t significantly impact our current situation since it’s still several years off. However, it’s undeniable that the PS5 is approaching its lifespan. With the introduction of the PS5 Pro, Sony’s next significant move seems likely to be in the realm of PlayStation 6.
Despite appearing trustworthy from certain sources, there remains much uncertainty surrounding these rumors. It’s crucial to approach the information with caution, as if sprinkling it with a touch of salt. Furthermore, based on a Microsoft court filing, any tangible evidence may not surface before 2027 or even 2028 at the earliest.
