The 50th season of Saturday Night Live has brought many significant events to the 2025 TV schedule, including some contentious issues such as Aimee Lou Wood’s debate on the “The White Potus” sketch and Morgan Wallen’s viral exit. However, a delightful turn of events that I find endearing is thanks to Bill Burr. It seems that during the big anniversary weekend, the comedian had a conversation with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder about the iconic band. More specifically, Burr expressed his dislike for the popular ’90s genre, and I must admit, I adore this little tale even more.
Bill Burr, who’s currently starring in the Broadway play “Glengarry Glen Ross,” recently dropped by “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” During their chat, they discussed Burr’s play and his latest special, “Bill Burr: Drop Dead Years” (available for Hulu subscribers). One of the more notable topics they delved into was the origin of Burr’s dislike for Pearl Jam and its lead singer. On YouTube, Burr explained that he despised the band when they emerged because it symbolized a significant change in the music scene. He elaborated:
(In this version, I aimed to maintain the original structure while making the language more conversational and easy to read.)
They often claim that Nirvana delivered an exceptional performance. In reality, it was Pearl Jam. When Pearl Jam emerged – They were one of those grunge bands from Seattle. At that point, I found myself thinking, ‘Oh, my God. This isn’t over.’ It felt like the wave just kept coming. And before long, all my favorite bands, such as Skid Row, had faded away. What was left were melancholic musicians singing about life under a bridge and their unhappiness. I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘What happened to the carefree times and the ignoring of problems through cocaine?’ That era seemed to have come to an end.
Bill Burr’s grudge against grunge, particularly Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder, has lasted far too long, spanning several decades. Despite the polarizing opinions about Pearl Jam, Bill Burr’s resentment stands out. It’s worth noting that he isn’t entirely off-base in his criticism. Although Nirvana paved the way, Pearl Jam raised the stakes.
The long-running storyline appeared to have its final chapter closed at the grand Studio 8H event (available for streaming via Peacock). The generous budget for the anniversary weekend allowed for numerous big-name celebrities to attend. During the evening, Burr shared a lighthearted dispute he had with the band, Pearl Jam, and admitted that he now appreciates their music as a fan.
In the end, I found myself seated next to him, and he joked that he had accomplished something. I responded with a mix of feelings, “Dude, I couldn’t stand your band. You broke my heart.” He laughed. I then said, “Did you know it took me twenty years to acknowledge how fantastic Pearl Jam is?” Now, I adore them, but for so long, I refused to listen to their music.
In Hollywood, it’s rare to find someone as unique as the former Breaking Bad actor, and his unconventional nature is simply endearing! The fact that he could harbor such anger, keep it for so long, let go of it, and then openly discuss it with the lead singer is pure gold. It piques my curiosity about more of his views, even on the humorous theory suggesting he might be Billy Corgan’s half-brother. I bet there would be many more hilarious opinions from this 56-year-old. At this point, there seems to be enough proof that they are not related.
After Burr’s dissatisfaction towards Pearl Jam has subsided, I can now enjoy his March 14th standup and eagerly anticipate his future complaints. If it’s similar to this one, I’ll remain equally engaged.
Moreover, Quinta Brunson and Benson Boone are all set to shine as the host and musical guest for Saturday Night Live (SNL) on May 3rd. The show will air on NBC at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). For those who miss the live broadcast, it can be streamed the next day with a Peacock account.
