Andor Season 2: Dedra and Syril’s Forbidden Romance Confirmed!

This article contains spoilers for Andor Season 1 Episodes 1 through 3

In the second season of “Andor,” now streaming on Disney+, the response has been overwhelmingly favorable, even surpassing previous seasons in critical acclaim. The initial three episodes of Season 2 take place a year after the events of Season 1, and four years before the Battle of Yavin, which is the timeline for “Rogue One” and “Star Wars.” This time leap helps viewers get back up to speed with what’s been happening to the characters since we last left them. A significant plot twist from Season 2 answers a question fans have had since the first season, by confirming a romantic involvement… but it isn’t between Cassian Andor and Bix, instead involving Imperial officers Dedra Meero (played by Denise Gough) and Syril Karn (portrayed by Kyle Soller).

In the first season, I found myself among the Empire, where I, Dedra, was climbing the ranks within the Imperial Office, while Syril was relegated to a clerk position following a misstep in the initial three episodes of Andor. Fans quickly began to pair us together romantically, a trend they refer to as “shipping.” One particularly memorable fan edit utilized Taylor Swift’s “Mastermind.” Following the conclusion of Season 1, Jenna Busch wrote for Slash Film, expressing the shared sentiment among viewers: “Is it inappropriate that we already want Dedra and Syril to share a kiss in Andor?” This piece delved into what makes this unexpected, seemingly unappealing relationship between two Imperials so enticing for viewers.

Despite a romantic relationship between two Star Wars Imperial bureaucrats appearing unlikely to fans, their storyline has proven captivating for the fandom. Here’s what makes this romance intriguing, its comparison to the broader Star Wars saga, and why it seems destined for a tragic conclusion.

Caught Up in a Bad Romance

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I must say that the unique aspect of Dedra and Syril’s romantic storyline stands out starkly against the norm in this galaxy far, far away. In the grand scheme of things, love isn’t something we usually associate with villains in this universe. We’ve got Sith Lords and bounty hunters galore, but they’re more renowned for their hatred, thirst for power, and vengeance, rather than being smitten by affection. Even Darth Vader, with his complicated history with Padme, never showed any signs of romantic love in the original trilogy. Characters like Maul, Boba Fett, and Palpatine seem to have no room for love stories. In fact, it’s often the introduction of romance that signals a villain’s redemption arc, be it Asajj Ventress or Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. But Dedra and Syril’s story is different; it challenges these conventions and offers a fresh perspective on love in the Star Wars universe.

As a movie enthusiast, I find the dynamic between Dedra and Syril captivating, especially considering they’re not just villains, but members of the Empire – a government known for its oppressive pursuit of suppressing freedom across the galaxy. It’s oddly intriguing that a romance from such malevolent gears sparks so much interest. Still, it’s hard not to hope for them as a couple. Interestingly, their pairing fits well with the broader narrative of Andor.

In the original trilogy, the Empire was portrayed as a one-dimensional evil force, using powerful superweapons to destroy planets and ruled by dark wizards who appeared to be consumed by the desire for power. The series Andor presents a different perspective of evil, focusing on the routine administrative tasks that keep the Empire running. It doesn’t necessarily make the Empire’s associates more sympathetic, but it reveals the diverse individuals responsible for maintaining its operations. Unlike faceless Stormtroopers or nameless officers without personal lives, Andor offers a glimpse into their everyday lives, even showcasing a fully developed romantic relationship, offering a new perspective on villainy.

In Andor, we see that the freedom fighters can perform dreadful deeds in pursuit of liberty, yet it also highlights instances where Empire members exhibit apparently compassionate gestures. Their romantic relationship doesn’t absolve them from their wrongdoings or erase their transgressions. Instead, this relationship encourages viewers to ponder whether love, regardless of its source, doesn’t inherently make a person virtuous. A person who loves another deeply does not necessarily mean they are devoid of malicious intent.

Love in a Galaxy Far Far Away

The partnership between Dedra and Syril differs significantly from the romantic relationship between Cassian Andor and Bix Caleen, as it’s usually depicted in the Star Wars universe. While Dedra and Syril cohabit, they seem awkward around each other. Dedra shows affection for Syril, even reprimanding his overbearing mother, yet their bond seems cold, whether in terms of intimacy or their shared work with the Empire keeping them apart. This is distinct from Andor and Bix, who, though separated for most of the first three episodes, share a palpable affection and chemistry that cannot be ignored.

In the Star Wars saga, love has played a complex role. While the prequels suggest that Anakin’s love for Padme drove him to the dark side, this interpretation may oversimplify the issue. The Jedi Order, as portrayed in the prequels, is shown to be flawed, and Anakin felt unsupported by them. This lack of guidance left him vulnerable to Palpatine’s manipulation. However, some fans argue that Anakin became Darth Vader because his love for Padme clouded his judgment.

This perspective contrasts sharply with the original trilogy, where love is portrayed as a powerful force for good. Luke’s love for his friends helps him overcome adversity, and the romantic relationship between Han Solo and Leia adds emotional depth to their characters. Love is typically associated with the light side of the Force, while the dark side represents hatred.

In most Disney Star Wars productions, romantic elements have been sparse compared to titles like “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Fans particularly enjoyed the chemistry between Finn (played by John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), as well as the popular fan theory of Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), known as “Reylo.” However, these romantic elements were often underdeveloped or overlooked in the films. Therefore, the confirmation that there will be a romance between Dedra and Syril is exciting because it seems Disney and Lucasfilm have been attentive to fan feedback and are developing a natural storyline in this aspect.

These two characters have run into each other, and even though they both have significant imperfections, they seem to care for each other more deeply than initially anticipated. Amidst the intrigue and power struggles in the series Andor, the romantic relationship between Dedra and Syril offers a surprising and delightful contrast, introducing fresh dimensions into the show. How does romance unfold among villains, especially within an empire like this? Navigating a workplace romance is always challenging, but what if the office is a secretive fascist regime? Ultimately, they must decide whether their allegiance lies with the Empire or with each other.

A Doomed Romance in ‘Andor’

It seems almost inevitable that the love story between Dedra and Syril will end in sorrow, considering neither character appears in ‘Rogue One’ or the original trilogy, suggesting they may not make it to the completion of the Death Star. While there’s a slim possibility they could survive, their absence from the original trilogy suggests otherwise. This isn’t unprecedented in the ‘Star Wars’ universe; characters like Ahsoka Tano and the crew of the Ghost from ‘Star Wars Rebels’ have been introduced post-original trilogy only to meet unfortunate ends. However, the fact that their relationship seems to be set up for heartbreak could be a deliberate choice in Dedra and Syril’s storyline.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but see a touch of melancholic beauty in this scenario. These two characters, who have devoted their lives to the Empire, are loved and cared for only by each other. Yet, their unwavering loyalty to the Empire might lead them on a destructive path towards power, causing an irreparable rift between them that could turn them against one another. In the end, what will be achieved? The Empire probably won’t even notice, and they will likely be discarded, replaced by others. Love and romance have no place in the Empire or the Dark Side of the Force; it seems as if all that remains is a cold, unfeeling power struggle.

Fans have longed for three years to learn if Syril and Dedra would become a couple, and now that they are, it seems their relationship might be doomed. If Andor can cause viewers to mourn the demise of these villains’ unconventional romance, then it demonstrates the show’s ability to captivate audiences emotionally. Andor is currently streaming on Disney+.
