Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Andor season 2 episodes 1, 2, and 3.
At last, episodes 1, 2, and 3 of season 2 for the series “Andor” are now available on Disney+. Here’s a rundown of all the hidden “Star Wars” references we’ve spotted in the show so far. The upcoming TV shows don’t get much more eagerly awaited than “Andor” season 2, which is not just the last season but also sets up events that will eventually lead to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
In keeping with anticipation, it was assumed that Andor Season 2 would feature links to Rogue One. However, connections to various Star Wars films, TV shows, books, comics, and more can be spotted throughout Andor Season 2. Here’s a roundup of the Easter eggs we’ve discovered in Andor Season 2, episodes 1, 2, and 3, thus far.
1. The Rakatan Invasion Officially Happened At The Dawn Of The Jedi Order
Andor Confirmed The Rakatan Invaded Chandrila 25,000 Years Ago
In the second season of Andor, it was verified that the Rakatan Invasion transpired 25,000 years before the series, as evidenced by a temple figure that was taken from Chandrila 25,000 years ago during the invasion. This corroborates that the Rakatan invasion occurred concurrently with the establishment of the Jedi Order (around 25,000 BBY). Previously, Star Wars canon had not definitively provided this timeline, although Star Wars Legends had suggested as much.
2. Andor Season 2 Is Setting Up The Ghorman Massacre From Star Wars Legends
There Have Been Many References To Ghorman, Setting Up A Brutal Story Arc
Interestingly, the Ghorman Massacre has yet to be depicted in the Star Wars universe, even though it played a significant role in Rebellion history. In this incident, the Empire indiscriminately opened fire on peaceful protesters at Ghorman, resulting in numerous casualties. It appears that this tragic event may find its way into Andor season 2.
3. Chandrila’s Marriage Braid Parallels The Padawan Braid
This Is A Fascinating Connection To The Jedi Knighting Ceremony
At her Chandrilan wedding ceremony, Leida Mothma, the daughter of Mon Mothma, has a long braid in her hair cut off. This gesture recalls the customary act for Jedi Padawans when they are knighted, as their braids are traditionally cut off. Notably, this symbolic event hasn’t been depicted on screen, even with Anakin Skywalker’s braid; however, we know he gave his to Padmé.
4. Cassian Andor Steals A TIE Avenger Prototype
The TIE Cassian Steals Has An Intriguing History
In the opening episode of season 2 for the series ‘Andor’, Cassian Andor acquires a prototype of the TIE Avenger – a spaceship model we’ve seen in Star Wars canon for the first time. Interestingly, the TIE Avenger has an earlier history within the franchise’s lore. In the ‘Legends’ version, it is revealed that Grand Admiral Thrawn played a significant role in its design and creation.
5. Cassian’s TIE Breakout Is Reminiscent Of Poe Dameron
This Scene Feels Like A Total Callback
As a movie connoisseur, I must say that the scene where Cassian orchestrates the TIE heist is strikingly similar to Poe Dameron’s (and Finn’s) daring TIE theft in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In retrospect, these scenes seem more intertwined given their strategic placements within their respective narratives. Both occur near the opening of Andor season 2 and The Force Awakens, setting off a series of events that follow.
6. The “Ministry of Enlightenment” Has A Dark Real World Origin
This Real-World Connection Isn’t Subtle Whatsoever
In season 2 of Andor, we encounter an entity called the “Ministry of Enlightenment,” which may give you a sense of unease due to its striking similarity with the real-world “Ministry of Propaganda and Public Enlightenment” from Nazi Germany. This connection highlights how the fictional Empire in Star Wars is being portrayed and manipulated, drawing parallels between the two worlds.
7. Director Krennic Gives A Famous Palpatine Line A New Spin
This Line Is A Perfect Revenge Of The Sith Callback
In the first episode of Andor season 2, Director Krennic describes the Death Star as a source of “constant, boundless energy.” This remark subtly echoes Palpatine’s claim about “boundless power” in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. However, this is quite ironic since it was revealed that Palpatine never truly possessed unlimited power; instead, he required the Death Star for his purposes.
8. You May Have Heard Those TIE Interceptor Sounds Before
Some Viewers May Have Noticed Those TIEs Sound Awfully Familiar
For fans of Star Wars who have played the games, an enjoyable detail is that the noises of the TIE Interceptor resemble those heard during the loading screen in Star Wars: Battlefront II.
9. This Isn’t The First Time We’ve Heard Of Imperial News
This News Network Was Actually Already Canon
Despite the playful connotations that “Imperial News Network” might initially evoke, it’s important to note that this news network was established prior to its appearance in Andor season 2. Evidence of this can be found in “The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia,” a reference book written by Pablo Hidalgo and Stephen J. Sansweet in 2008. In the encyclopedia, the Imperial News Network is described as being part of the civilian branch of the Imperial Intelligence’s media division, serving to disseminate propaganda, thereby strengthening this depiction of a biased news network within the Star Wars universe.
10. There’s A Striking Contrast Between Krennic’s Summit & Another In The Bad Batch
Krennic Makes A Shocking Decision In Andor Season 2
In the opening episodes of season 2 of Andor, Director Krennic convenes a gathering that stands in stark contrast to a similar event depicted in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Unlike the summit led by Tarkin in The Bad Batch, this one is orchestrated by Krennic in season 2 and deliberately kept hidden from Tarkin. This suggests that Krennic is positioning himself for a power grab, mirroring the secretive strategy employed during the Wannsee Conference in Nazi Germany.
11. The Empire Strikes Back’s Snowtroopers Make A Return
These Iconic Stormtroopers Can Be Seen In Andor Season 2
In the second season of “Andor,” those familiar stormtroopers from “The Empire Strikes Back” make another appearance. However, it’s important to note that their return to our screens wasn’t limited to this show, as they had previously battled in the Battle of Crait, featured in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
12. You May Have Heard Of The Sienar Advanced Project Lab Before
This Reference Has A Connection To Another One Of Star Wars’ Best Shows
The mention of a Sienar Advanced Project Lab in the second season of Andor shares a link with Star Wars Rebels, since there was similarly an lab present in that series, located on Lothal and functioning as both a design and testing ground for Sienar Fleet Systems.
13. “You’ve Become More Than Your Fear” Is An Andor Season 1 Callback
This Line Directly Connected To Another Powerful Line From Andor Season 1
In the first season of Andor, Karis Nemik tells Cassian Andor, “Oppression is the disguise of fear.” This statement, part of a larger quote, encapsulates the reality of living under a repressive regime like the Empire. The second season of Andor expands upon this idea with the line, “You’ve risen above your fear,” indicating a significant evolution from the events of the first season.
14. One Key Line In Andor’s Premiere Parallels Rogue One
Another Callback Line Connects To Cassian And Jyn Erso In Rogue One
In the second season of ‘Andor’, the phrase, “‘You’re returning to yourself'” echoes a sentiment similar to Cassian Andor saying “‘Welcome home'” in ‘Rogue One’. It is important to note that Jyn Erso, who appears alongside Cassian in ‘Rogue One’, will likely not be present in ‘Andor’ season 2, as the show primarily focuses on Cassian’s story. This subtle nod towards their shared history adds a layer of depth to the series.
15. Did You Spot A Familiar Location As A Password?
This Was A Truly Brilliant Callback To Rogue One
In the second season of Andor, the term “Kafrene” is employed as a secret code or password, subtly referencing its significance in Rogue One, being the starting point of Cassian Andor’s journey within the Star Wars universe.
16. Bix Is Fixing A Vaporator Just Like The Ones On Tatooine
Vaporators Have Been A Part Of Star Wars From The Very Beginning
In the debut of season 2 for ‘Andor’, Bix Caleen is depicted tinkering with a vaporator – an unmistakable reference to Luke Skywalker, who spent his youth fixing up moisture farmers’ equipment on Tatooine. Despite ‘Andor’s intention to distinguish itself from the Skywalker family lineage and the broader Skywalker Saga, this subtle nod is well-placed and appreciated.
17. Andor’s Alarm Sounds Are Similar To Rogue One As Well
This Subtle Connection Offers The Two Stories Continuity
In the stories of both ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Andor’, there’s a subtle connection through the sound of their alarms. Interestingly, these alarms share the same tone in both productions, unlike other Star Wars projects. While it may go unnoticed, this shared alarm noise serves as a bridge connecting the movie and the series.
18. Andor Season 2 Has A Surprising Number Of Galactic Starcruiser / Galaxy’s Edge Easter Eggs
Andor Season 2 Was Absolutely Full Of Galactic Starcruiser And Galaxy’s Edge Easter Eggs
In the second season of Andor, there were numerous nods to Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser and Galaxy’s Edge from Disney parks. Across episodes 1, 2, and 3, we identified several references, including:
- Scanning devices that make the same sound as the Halcyon bridge
- Chandrila’s blue and gold traditional colors come from the Halcyon
- Circular imagery and architecture also inspired by the Halcyon
- Holoprojectors that look like the ones in the interrogation room in Galaxy’s Edge’s Rise of the Resistance ride
- Chandrilan music derived from the Galactic Starcruiser’s instrumentals
- Food and utensils similar to those used on the Galactic Starcruiser and/or seen in Galaxy’s Edge
