Abed’s Farscape Wormhole Theory: Earth Might Be Gone Forever!

Over the years, I’ve developed my own interpretations regarding the less clear aspects of the “Farscape” series, a space opera that I’ve been following since childhood. However, the most compelling theory I’ve encountered surprisingly emerged from an unlikely source – a sitcom episode that aired towards the end of 2010. In this episode, one of the characters made some speculations about “Farscape” canon, and these ideas have stayed with me ever since. Although the discussion was primarily used as a setup for a joke, I firmly believe the sitcom character had a keen insight into the show’s lore.

The sci-fi series Farscape ended in 2003 after four seasons, but Syfy produced a two-part miniseries named The Peacekeeper Wars in 2004 to tie up loose ends, as showrunner Rockne S. O’Bannon wanted. Since then, the characters have appeared in comic books, but there hasn’t been any more screen time for them since the end of The Peacekeeper Wars. I’d be thrilled if we got a revival of Farscape, just to get some answers to all my lingering questions. For now, until that happens, I can only speculate based on theories I heard in a sitcom 14 years ago.

Abed’s Farscape Theory In Community Season 2 Explained

Danny Pudi’s Community character caught my attention with his Farscape theory

In the tenth episode of Community’s second season, titled “Mixology Certification,” Abed Nadir, played by Danny Pudi, presents a theory concerning the workings of Farscape’s wormholes. The wormholes play a significant role in the series, explaining how Commander John Crichton (Ben Browder) came to be stranded so far from Earth. For much of the show, Crichton’s main objective was to find another wormhole to return home. However, if Abed’s theory holds true, it implies that Crichton’s plan may have always been destined for failure. In essence, Abed proposes that the wormholes are not just portals through space, but also passages through time.

There’s a chance that the wormhole Crichton passed through may have transported him not just across space, but also to different time periods.

If Abed’s theory is correct, then Crichton might have ended up in a time period far removed from the one he initially left during Farscape’s first episode. This could mean that Crichton would encounter planets inhabited by people other than those he originally parted ways with. In fact, if Crichton finds himself in the future, which seems to be Abed’s preferred option, then there’s a possibility that Earth no longer exists, having been wiped out or replaced over time. Using a wormhole for travel could potentially take Crichton back to present-day Earth, or it might transport him through space to where his home planet once stood.

Community’s Wormhole Theory Answers One Of Farscape’s Biggest Peacekeeper Mysteries

Sebaceans are essentially just humans under a different name

In the universe of Farscape, it’s often shown that many Peacekeepers are from the Sebacean race, who share a striking resemblance to humans. This similarity is consistently highlighted in the series, and Crichton often uses this to his advantage by blending in. However, the show never fully clarifies why an alien race from so far away in the galaxy would look like ordinary humans. The story leaves hints, but there are no definitive explanations within the canon of Farscape. If Abed’s wormhole theory holds true, it could potentially provide a solution to this intriguing aspect of Farscape lore.

In the “Mixology Certification” show, Abed suggests that Crichton’s wormhole journey might indicate that Sebaceans are essentially advanced forms of humans. Although Sebaceans have some peculiarities that may seem disadvantageous, such as disliking warm temperatures, they live much longer than humans do. This implies that either through natural evolution or science-fiction manipulation, the striking resemblance between Sebaceans and humans might be because they are descendants of Earth.

Why Abed’s Take On Farscape’s Wormholes Is So Perfect

Community hit on something that is tricky to disprove

The excellence of Abed’s Farscape theory in Community lies in its seamless integration with the space opera’s established lore. While it doesn’t guarantee his ideas are correct, disproving them is quite challenging, if not outright difficult. As such, one can choose to dismiss it if it doesn’t align with your beliefs, or adopt it as part of your personal interpretation if you find it fits the narrative well. This principle underpins most solid theories, particularly for science fiction shows like Farscape.

Indeed, if Abed’s wormhole theory holds true, it sheds an entirely fresh perspective on the sci-fi series, Farscape. This revelation, however, carries a touch of melancholy as it implies Earth may no longer exist, following the wormhole expelling Crichton in the show’s opening episode. Consequently, every effort he makes to return home becomes futile, and yet, his finding a new family amidst the odds stacked against him in Farscape seems even more serendipitous.
