Lorde Debuts New Single ‘What Was That’ at Washington Square Park

Lorde is making her return with a touch of unexpected excitement. On Tuesday evening at Washington Square Park, the star unveiled her latest single “What Was That” to hundreds of enthusiastic fans, revealing on Wednesday that the song would be released a day ahead of schedule, surprising fans who were initially anticipating it for tonight.

Back in April, Lorde hinted at a new song by sharing a clip on TikTok where she was strolling through Central Park with the track playing. She invited fans to join her at the park on a Tuesday evening at 7 pm, which many did. However, as reported by The New York Times, Lorde didn’t have the necessary permit and the police called off the gathering.

The audience persisted, and eventually, Lorde emerged later in the night. She danced energetically on a wooden stage, surrounded by enthusiastic fans, while the music from her latest single echoed through speakers.

On Wednesday morning, she posted a short video on social media platforms, showing herself taking deep breaths while looking into her phone camera. She announced that her new song “What Was That” would be released at Midnight Eastern Time. This single marks the start of Lorde’s upcoming fourth album, and it’s her first since the 2021 release of “Solar Power.

For nearly four years now, fans have been eagerly anticipating her next album release. However, she hasn’t spent this time idle. Last year, she collaborated with Charli XCX on a remix of “Girl, so confusing”, which was part of Charli’s album titled “Brat”. During Coachella’s first weekend last year, Charli invited Lorde to join her for a surprise performance of the song. This collaboration was one of the most talked-about surprise guest appearances at the entire festival.

This month, Lorde shared a voice message with her fans, hinting at the upcoming phase in her career, expressing that “significant shifts are on the horizon.

She expressed her readiness, something she wasn’t sure she’d ever feel, but now she does. She’s deeply grateful for your understanding and could sense your affection. This is going to be quite an adventure, trust me! I adore you immensely; I’ll chat with you soon.
