This week, PokeMon GO brings back the competitive Player vs Player (PvP) cups to their original format. The Great League, Ultra League, and Master League are all open for players to battle against each other. Unlike some of the cups, like the Spring Cup in Pokemon GO, all three leagues this week have only one restriction per battle, which is based on a Pokemon’s Combat Power (CP).
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that most Pokémon are eligible for all three leagues during the upcoming event – Great League with a maximum CP of 1500, Ultra League with a max CP of 2500, and Master League where any Pokémon is fair game. These cups will be accessible from 9PM local time on April 22, all the way until 9PM local time on April 29. This event coincides with the Sweet Discoveries event within Pokémon GO.
Best Pokémon Team Great League, Ultra League, & Master League
The Best Teams For Each Cup
In each fight within the GO Battle League, you’ll pick three Pokémon and decide which one will initiate the battle. The meta in the GO Battle League is always evolving, making it tough to find the best teams for individual battles, but these suggestions below perform well against popular meta teams.
For each encounter in the GO Battle League, you must choose three Pokémon and decide which one kicks off the battle. The meta within the GO Battle League changes frequently, making it challenging to select top-tier teams, but these suggestions work effectively against current popular teams.
Among all the cups, The Great League features a meta that changes minimally. Consequently, one of the top teams you can still rely on includes Feraligatr, Morpeko, and Clodsire. As with any top-tier team, these three Pokémon work harmoniously, exploiting each other’s strengths to counteract the weaknesses of the opposing team members.
In the Ultra League, a variety of Pokémon can be selected, yet most top choices remain non-Legendaries because their stats are not optimized at this CP level. This makes a fantastic team to utilize Lapras, Grumpig, and Dusknoir. Both Dusknoir and Lapras have been fan favorites for quite some time, while Grumpig has recently entered the strategic pool thanks to its move set in 2025.
In the Master League Cup, you are free to utilize any Pokémon you prefer, however, maximizing their Combat Power (CP) using Stardust is highly recommended. Given the variety of Pokémon you can choose from, Legendaries tend to reign supreme. For instance, Palkia, Zygarde (Complete Forme), and Ho-Oh make a formidable team in this league. Since its introduction to Pokémon GO, Dragon- and Water-type Palkia has been exceptional alongside Zygarde, another powerful attacker. Ho-Oh complements the team by capitalizing on the weaknesses of the first two Pokémon.
Best Alternate Teams To Use During Great League, Ultra League, and Master League
Further Useful Options To Pick
As a gamer, I always keep an alternate team on standby during the three cups, just in case my usual one consistently faces opponents with an edge. For the Great League, it’s crucial to have Pokemon that can withstand a few hits. Right now, my go-to backup team is Azumarill, Primeape, and Mandibuzz. Azumarill is a fantastic pick for the Great League due to its bulky Water- and Fairy-type nature, while Primeape and Mandibuzz serve as great switches for it.
In the Ultra League, power-packed additions like Feraligatr and Primeape become viable choices, especially if they have a sufficient CP level. Additionally, Corviknight is an excellent pick to complement your team given its strength against various other Pokémon in the Ultra League meta.
In the Master League, Mewtwo, Dragonite, and Solgaleo make for a powerful attacking team that can tackle most top-tier opponents in Pokemon GO. Mewtwo is one of the most versatile Pokemon in this game, and many trainers have high Combat Power (CP) versions by now. As competitions in the Great League, Ultra League, and Master League GO Battle League are highly competitive, it’s crucial to choose the optimal teams when playing Pokemon GO.
