There’s no denying that Xbox has been outpaced by PlayStation in this generation’s console race, but it doesn’t preclude them from adjusting their approach going forward. Fortunately, they have Microsoft Game Pass, which enjoyed a remarkable year in 2021.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled about Xbox head Phil Spencer’s focus on expanding game availability across multiple consoles and championing the Game Pass service. Initially, some gamers might have dismissed the subscription model, but now seems like an opportune moment to join—given the fantastic selection of games at your fingertips!
Xbox Game Pass Today
According to Tom Warren from The Verge, signing up for Game Pass currently offers an array of exciting new and upcoming games such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, along with the newly released remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Note that while ‘Game Pass’ includes ‘Xbox’ in its name, you don’t necessarily require an Xbox to use the service. The Game Pass is also accessible for those playing on PC, and a handful of cloud-compatible games can be streamed on various devices like phones, laptops, or tablets.
Xbox Game Pass Tiers
As an enthusiast, I understand that every player has unique preferences and schedules. Some might delve into their entire library frequently, while others may play games only sporadically every few weeks. Fortunately, the Xbox offers a variety of subscription plans to cater to these diverse needs: Core ($10.95/month), Standard ($15.95/month), and Ultimate ($22.95/month). For PC gamers, there’s a separate plan available at $13.95/month, with the first 14 days free. Notably, the Ultimate plan is also accessible on both platforms.
According to Xbox head Phil Spencer’s suggestion, if you enjoy gaming and have some spare time, it might be beneficial for you to subscribe to Game Pass. However, if your gaming time is limited or you prefer a more casual approach to gaming without delving deeply into the game library, it might make more sense for you to purchase individual games instead.
Decline of the Console?
Despite facing challenges in the market lately, it’s been noted that consoles, particularly this generation, are experiencing a general downturn. For now, it appears Xbox is leading the way by focusing on making their games more accessible, which may be more effective than persuading people to buy a console altogether.
As the launch of the Switch 2 and GTA VI approach, causing an anticipated surge in game prices, the idea of a Game Pass subscription is becoming increasingly attractive to consumers, although it’s uncertain when exactly they will reap the benefits of this strategy.
