Actor Pedro Pascal criticized author J.K. Rowling over her recent tweets about transgender people, labeling her as “a despicable failure” in a post on Instagram.
Actor from The Last of Us was addressing a comment by Tariq Ra’ouf, an activist, who criticized the author for applauding a recent UK Supreme Court decision that denied legal recognition of trans women as women and defined “sex” as biologically determined.
J.K. Rowling wrote, “It’s great when a plan works out,” and added a comment to a critic saying, “Regardless of whether you read my books or destroy them, I receive the same royalties. Have fun with your s’mores!” (assuming s’mores are made with marshmallows)
Ra’ouf’s post advocated for a boycott against HBO’s revival of the Harry Potter TV series, encouraging his audience to take action. He suggested that they should express their views by commenting on every update and article related to the show, voicing their support for transgender rights with phrases such as “trans rights are human rights” and “trans women are women.” Additionally, he urged them not to purchase tickets to visit Universal Orlando’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
In a recent post, Pascal’s comment appears to endorse the negative stance towards an upcoming anti-Harry Potter show, even though he didn’t directly refer to Harry Potter himself. Notably, HBO is planning to reimagine the entire Harry Potter series as separate TV seasons, with Mark Mylod, who directed the recent game-changing episode of The Last of Us featuring Pascal’s character Joel, taking on the lead director role for this project.
Casey Bloys, head of HBO, had previously brushed off concerns about a potential boycott, citing the unprecedented success of the “Hogwarts Legacy” video game. Despite facing calls for a boycott due to J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues, this game turned out to be the top-selling video game in 2023.
For quite some time, Pascal has been an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2021, his sister Lux Pascal publicly announced her identity as a transgender woman. The picture you see was taken at the UK premiere of the Marvel movie “Thunderbolts,” where Pascal wore a “Protect the Daughters” T-shirt, a phrase that symbolizes protection and support for trans women.
Ra’ouf remarked: “Rowling appears incredibly pleased with her efforts in recent years, fueling prejudice and apprehension among the public towards a marginalized group that is already one of the least comprehended populations globally.
As reported by Reuters, the UK court clarified that certain single-sex facilities, including shelters, hospitals, and sports programs, can legally exclude transgender women. However, it’s important to note that all transgender individuals continue to be safeguarded from any form of discrimination or harassment.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been keeping an eye on the buzz surrounding HBO’s revamp of the Harry Potter universe. The Hollywood Reporter has brought up some intriguing points in their piece titled “HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Faces Three Big Questions.” They ponder over potential hurdles, such as how J.K. Rowling’s views may influence the show. It’s fascinating stuff!
