Once more, she brought honor to our country by being awarded the Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a prestigious title bestowed upon her by the French Government.

The Consulate General of France in Mumbai’s official Instagram account posted several images from a recent event. In the captions, they praised Payal Kapadia, stating, “A moment of pride and inspiration for Indian cinema! The embassy announced in their post that this honor recognizes Payal’s exceptional work in cinema and her efforts to strengthen cultural bonds between France and India. Back in 2024, she made history by claiming the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature film All We Imagine as Light – marking the first Indian film to win the main competition at Cannes in three decades. A big round of applause goes out to Payal!
Payal clinched the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival with All We Imagine as Light, a film that also earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Director. Additionally, she produced a short film titled Afternoon Clouds, which was the only Indian film chosen for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Moreover, Kapadia won the prestigious Golden Eye Award at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in the Best Documentary Film category for her first feature, A Night of Knowing Nothing.
