Oscars: Film Academy Revokes, Then Reinstates Screenings Access for Widows and Widowers After Backlash (Exclusive)

For the past week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences accidentally revoked a long-standing privilege they offered to the spouses of deceased members, a move that has stirred up significant criticism.

Over the past few decades, the Academy has granted widows and widowers the privilege of attending official member screenings in both Los Angeles and New York. Previously, they had also been permitted to attend these events alongside their spouses. However, Irene Ramp, the wife of The Graduate scriptwriter Buck Henry, recently encountered an issue at a screening on Saturday when she was informed that this practice is no longer being followed; she was told, “We don’t do it that way anymore.

This week, I got a letter from the gaming academy stating that due to an increasing number of members, now reaching 11,000 and growing, they’re tightening up the screening process. Now, only academy members and their invited non-journalist companions will be granted priority access.

In an email to the Academy, which was also sent to other widows and widowers, Ramp expressed her disappointment by saying, “This decision was thoughtless, narrow-minded, and petty,” further elaborating, “The additional hurt comes from the realization that despite attending numerous screenings in recent months, the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in LA has seldom been fully occupied, often not even reaching half capacity.

In the responses backing up Ramp’s grievance, there were several notable individuals. These included Christine Cuddy, an entertainment lawyer, who had collaborated with Jack Nicholson on film projects; widow of Harry Gittes; and Laurie Rissien, the spouse of Edward Rissien, who had produced films alongside Harry Belafonte.

Claude Rush, wife of the director of “The Stunt Man” Richard Rush, expressed her concerns directly to the CEO of the Academy, Bill Kramer. Kramer responded with a message that included: “We’ve been receiving feedback from our members about not being able to attend more crowded screenings. Since these screenings are meant for our Academy members to watch new movies on the big screen and sometimes interact with the cast and crew, we understood that it was necessary to prioritize our members during this time.

Despite his initial promise, Kramer pledged to closely monitor the situation as they delve deeper into it. True to his word, on a Thursday, these bereaved individuals received an email from him stating:

“I will be keeping a watchful eye on this matter as we progress in our investigation.

According to inside sources, the Academy was taken aback when they found out around 1,500 non-members had been granted access to member screenings in past years, a practice they had previously allowed with less scrutiny. As the membership has grown significantly over the last decade, there have been rising worries that members might not be able to attend these screenings. This concern led to the decision to restrict screenings only to members. However, it was only after this change was announced that it was discovered widows and widowers were among those affected. Consequently, the decision was reversed.

No matter what discussions took place, it is reported that widows and widowers express great satisfaction with how the matter was settled.
