After a wait of approximately 25 years (or 22 years considering its initial limited PC release), the cherished JRPG, Breath of Fire IV, is now being conserved onto the PC platform via GOG.
The GOG release comes with a host of enhancements for Windows 10 and 11 users, including:
- Full compatibility and stability upgrades (covering cutscenes, battles, and task-switching)
- Dual-language support (English and Japanese)
- An overhauled DirectX renderer with options like V-Sync, anti-aliasing, gamma correction, and integer scaling
- Improved audio and sound design, keyboard and mouse support, and expanded controller compatibility

Essentially, this game doesn’t have Digital Rights Management (DRM), so there are no necessities for reactivation checks or online connections once you buy it. In other words, when you own the game, you can keep it forever.
Initially launched during the peak period of the PlayStation One, Breath of Fire IV was the first JRPG for numerous gamers (including myself). The fact that it’s back is a delightful expansion to GOG’s expanding collection of timeless classics.
In an expansive realm brimming with magic and wonder, the narrative of Breath of Fire IV unfolds. The story centers around Princess Nina from Wyndia, who embarks on a life-or-death journey to locate her sister, Elena, who vanished close to the old battlefront. As she journeys, she encounters Ryu, a cryptic warrior with unique locks of blue hair and the extraordinary talent to morph into a dragon. The destinies of Nina, Ryu, and the world soon intertwine as they traverse their respective paths.
Since the year 2008, GOG, also known as Good Old Games, has been diligently preserving older video titles.
