George Santos Sentenced to Over 7 Years in Prison for Fraud and Identity Theft

On Friday, George Santos, a disgraced ex-U.S. Congressman convicted of fabricating his biography and swindling contributors, was given a sentence of more than seven years in prison. As the verdict was read out, Santos broke down in tears.

In the year he spent as a representative for the Republicans in New York, he was removed from office by his fellow congressional members in 2023.

In the course of events, he confessed to tricking donors and illegally using the identities of around a dozen individuals, which included his own family members, for financing his successful campaign. As part of an agreement reached in a plea bargain, Santos will pay approximately $580,000 in fines along with serving prison time.

New York Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon pointed out that while some might view this act as a ‘crime without victims’ due to its financial nature, there are indeed numerous victims involved in this criminal activity.

She spoke before the court, claiming herself as a victim, since Santos was receiving unemployment benefits despite being employed by a business based in Florida.

Santos’ legal representatives advocated for a two-year jail term, which is the mandatory minimum punishment for aggravated identity theft.

Lawyer Andrew Mancilla depicted the former congressman as an individual shaped by hardship, presenting him as a troubled figure. It’s worth noting that Santos, who has no criminal history, spent his upbringing in a challenging environment and endured bullying throughout his life, according to the attorney’s statements.

Mancilla stated, ‘He constructed the person he aspired to become, rather than who he actually was.’ He chose to do this because he felt the world wouldn’t embrace him for his true self.

“Deep down, he is warm, kind, caring, and thoughtful,” Mancilla said.

But, the lawyer said, now “everyone hates George Santos.”

In 2022, Santos won the election, changing a previously affluent district that covers sections of Queens and Long Island from GOP control.

Shortly thereafter, it came to light that the political newcomer had crafted significant portions of his biography, portraying himself as a prosperous entrepreneur who had worked at esteemed financial institutions on Wall Street and owned substantial property in real estate.
