Get Ready: The Fantastic Four Make Their Epic MCU Debut This Summer!

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while characters like John Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic and Chris Evans’ Human Torch have made appearances during the Multiverse Saga, the main Fantastic Four team has yet to assemble in this superhero franchise. This is set to change in July with the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in 2025. Before that, an exciting first for the MCU is on the horizon – the publication of a comic book that exists within the same world as the upcoming movie.

It’s quite intriguing, isn’t it? That statement rings true… and it’s even more thrilling if you share my perspective. In the realm we inhabit, Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics have collaborated for Fantastic Four: First Steps #1, a project penned by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Mark Buckingham. This special issue will be available for digital purchase or at your neighborhood comic book store on July 2nd.

In the realm of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, it’s the Future Foundation that has joined forces with Marvel Comics for this particular comic book installment. On the Earth depicted here, this story unfolds four years after Reed Richards (portrayed by Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) had a space adventure, were struck by cosmic rays, and acquired the abilities that transformed them into Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, and The Human Torch respectively. Here’s the cover art for this issue, beautifully illustrated by Phil Noto.

With a cover reminiscent of the actual first issue of the Fantastic Four published in 1961, Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 will delve into the team’s initial adventure – the moment they unveiled their extraordinary powers to the world by saving New York City from imminent destruction. Here is what Matt Fraction, the writer for this issue (from the Earth of First Steps), had to share about his work…

A privilege to receive an invitation to contribute to the festivities marking the 4th anniversary of the Fantastic Four! The excitement was palpable when we embarked on their initial epic tale for comic book enthusiasts. This narrative, deeply ingrained in our memories, has been reimagined by Magic Mark Buckingham and me in a way that offers a fresh perspective – perhaps this is just the beginning of something momentous!

As a film enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” and while it’s been clarified that this reboot won’t delve into their origin story, the first trailer hinted at the events leading up to Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny’s space voyage. For those craving insights into their first superhero escapade, grabbing issue #1 of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is a must-have. This layer of storytelling gets even more intriguing when you consider that within the main Marvel Comics universe, comic books chronicling tales about characters like the Fantastic Four are published, making this an exciting blend of reality and fiction.

After the first issue of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits the shelves, we’ll only have to endure three more weeks before the movie premieres on July 25. Following this, Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny will reappear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” set for release on May 1, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027.
