You Won’t Recognize Grogu in The Mandalorian Movie

Director Jon Favreau teased a massive upgrade for Grogu in The Mandalorian Movie

In the year 2026, Pedro Pascal’s bald-headed bounty hunter and his charming, Force-using companion, Grogu, will reappear in a movie titled The Mandalorian & Grogu. This will be their first appearance on the big screen.

Previously, these Star Wars characters were last seen embarking on their journey independently, having assisted Bo Katan in recovering Mandalore, a planet that had been lost for some time. Meanwhile, Grogu, the young Jedi trainee, has progressed significantly and is now equipped for combat, residing within an old IG-88 battle droid’s body.

Grogu Gets a Big-Screen Upgrade

Grogu is getting an upgrade in The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, according to director Jon Favreau.

At Star Wars Celebration, Favreau shared that by the storyline of the upcoming movie, Mando’s Force-sensitive companion has developed further abilities.

To ensure things don’t get repetitive and to promote progression, it’s important that the dynamic between Mando and Grogu doesn’t remain stagnant. In this regard, their bond has developed significantly. Initially, Grogu was just an apprentice, but now he’s more than that – he’s a part of Mando’s family, having been adopted by him.

Grogu is growing increasingly at ease with his abilities, hinted Favreau, implying that the beloved character will persist on his journey influenced by the Force, and there will be a significant change as the narrative unfolds further.

As they depart, it’s his responsibility, as hinted at in the finale of the last season, to mentor him. They must embark on exciting journeys together, fostering an apprenticeship between them. Given Grogu’s past training under Luke Skywalker, he is growing more confident. The journey of the Force is a continuous one, and we aim for growth as the narrative expands, with Grogu maturing to match the grandeur of the storyline.

This boost in power presents a thrilling opportunity to delve into on-screen, as Grogu transitions from experimenting with The Force to wholeheartedly tapping into enigmatic cosmic energy and the abilities that accompany it.

How Will An Upgraded Grogu Look?

Despite undergoing an upgrade in “The Mandalorian & Grogu”, Grogu will remain as lovable and charming as ever when he steps into the spotlight on the big screen.

Some fortunate followers have been given a sneak peek at how this power enhancement might impact the developing Jedi apprentice.

At the 2025 Star Wars Celebration (where you can find all the major announcements here), there was footage shown where Grogu was seen using The Force in an impressive battle scene, during which Mando and his cute copilot breached an old AT-AT that had previously been run by the Empire.

What fans might want to pay attention to is if the small hero doesn’t receive any further enhancements.

It’s been suggested that the storyline of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ might progress with Grogu embarking on the next phase of his path as a Jedi, possibly even creating a miniature lightsaber for himself.

It’s unlikely that event would happen early on in the movie, more like towards the end, approaching the climax; but given the Jedi’s current journey, it seems plausible.

Another possible development for the character in the film could be delving deeper into his dual cosmic ancestry, specifically the Mandalorian aspect.

It’s possible that the forthcoming movie might depict the character earning full membership in the Mandalorian order, receiving an armor set similar to his adoptive Aq Vetinian father (commonly known as Mando).
