During an intimate interview with TopMob, Aamir Khan and his daughter Ira Khan candidly discussed the complex feelings of guilt, self-worth, and purpose that they both experience. Their heartfelt dialogue provided a unique look into their relationship, as Aamir tenderly encouraged Ira to accept her path in life without self-criticism.
During our conversation, Ira frankly discussed the challenges she faced prior to launching her mental health organization, Agatsu. She confided, “My parents have invested significantly in me financially, and at 26–27 years old, I feel like a person who’s not contributing anything meaningful to the world.
Upon hearing this, Aamir swiftly intervened to explain Ira’s sentiments, stating, “In other words, she’s not looking to make money…”. Ira concurred, further elaborating, “She didn’t mean making money, but rather doing something significant, before embarking on Agatsu.
In the course of our discussion, Aamir expressed an idea that resonated with many. He pointed out the excessive focus on earning in society, saying, “There are people who assist others and receive payment for it; whether or not I get paid, as long as I’m helping others, that’s another matter entirely. Your job is to help, and that’s enough.
He warmly remarked about Ira’s collaboration with Agatsu, “It truly means a great deal to me when people help so many others. The fact that you may be making money or not doesn’t matter, but what matters most is that you are doing commendable work.
Aamir clarified that at its heart, money is essentially an IOU that we all collectively approve as valuable. In simpler terms, he pointed out that money is just a promise we agree to honor; otherwise, it’s simply a piece of paper. He also noted that while some extraordinarily skilled individuals may struggle to fit within the conventional system of earning a regular income, this doesn’t undermine their value in any way.
In speaking with Ira, Aamir suggested, “I advised her to discern the purpose of her life and concentrate on helping others.” He further comforted her, knowing her parents are financially secure, she shouldn’t feel compelled to earn through a job but instead focus on Agatsu, as this could prevent the remarkable work the foundation is accomplishing.
