‘Sinners’ Slays Box Office Again, ‘Revenge of the Sith’ Surges Past ‘The Accountant 2’

The highly anticipated vampire film “Sinners,” helmed by Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler, ensured that April would be remembered fondly as it wrapped up, performing exceptionally well at the box office. Not only did it maintain its position as the top-grossing movie, but it also showed remarkable resilience in the gap between its initial and second weekends, contributing to an estimated domestic total of $45 million. This figure is just a hair shy of the amount earned during its opening weekend, which was $48 million.

The film “Sinners” saw an exceptionally small decrease of 6% in its box office earnings during its first weekend in theaters this year (April 18-20). This is the best performance so far in 2025, surpassing the 29% drop experienced by both “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Dog Man,” which held the top spots previously. Interestingly, despite their impressive weekend-to-weekend drops, neither “Mufasa” nor “Dog Man” managed to maintain their leading positions in the box office, with “Mufasa” slipping to second place and “Dog Man” dropping down to fourth.

In just two weekends of its theatrical release, the movie “Sinners” not only covered its $90 million production cost but exceeded it, earning a total of $161.6 million worldwide. The partnership between Jordan and Coogler on this project has been particularly successful, with $122.5 million earned domestically and an extra $39.1 million from international box offices. Simultaneously, the success of “Sinners” significantly impacted the overall box office rankings, causing a noticeable stir, much like a disturbance in the Force.

Darth Vader’s Origin Story Still Sells 20 Years After Its Original Release

Over the weekend, the uncontested box office king, “Sinners,” outshone all other movies. But the 20th anniversary screenings of “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” (2005) surprisingly moved up to the second spot with a strong $25.2 million earnings. This impressive performance came close to surpassing the opening-weekend re-release record of “The Lion King” (1994), which was set at $30.2 million in 2011.

Over the weekend, Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s film “The Accountant 2” earned third place at the box office with a total of $24.5 million. Interestingly, this sequel almost exactly matched the amount its 2016 predecessor made during its debut nearly nine years ago, as “The Accountant” initially brought in $24.7 million. Overall, it eventually grossed a worldwide total of $153 million. The “Minecraft Movie” came in fourth with another $22.7 million, boosting its global total to an astounding $816.6 million. The horror film from Sony Pictures, titled “Until Dawn,” ended the Top 5 with $8 million, while “Magic Farm,” distributed by MUBI, had the weekend’s highest per-theater average ($19,479) in limited release (at only one cinema).

Box Office 2025: Highest-Grossing Weekends (Domestic)

  1. $202.3 million (April 4-6)
  2. $153.9 million (Feb. 14-16)
  3. $149 million (April 11-13)
  4. $142.2 million (April 25-27)
  5. $135.8 million (April 18-20)

The upcoming summer movie season commences with the release of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Thunderbolts,” hitting theaters on May 2, 2025. This superhero movie is predicted to earn between $63 million and $77 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada, although some forecasts suggest an even higher debut of up to $85 million. However, these estimated figures are relatively low for a film aiming to be a summer blockbuster, and they don’t come close to matching the $88.8 million three-day opening of “Captain America: Brave New World” from February. Unfortunately, this doesn’t indicate a promising start for the MCU’s take on “The Suicide Squad.
