Among the 35 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), one standout title is conspicuously absent from a sequel, and I find it hard to believe that we’ve waited this long for a follow-up. Given the contentious nature of the MCU‘s Multiverse Saga, strengthening the franchise by emphasizing its greatest triumphs would be advantageous. Franchises within the MCU often have consistent release patterns, with two years elapsing between each film, such as the Spider-Man series in the MCU – however, this pattern will be disrupted in 2026 with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Despite the confirmation of a fourth Spider-Man film, it seems that other successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters haven’t been given the same level of certainty about future movies. This could be due to the fact that the Multiverse Saga has introduced numerous new characters such as Ironheart and the Eternals, adding to the franchise and requiring additional development. Given this situation, I believe one of these newer MCU characters is in greater need of a sequel than any other, a claim supported by an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences.
The MCU’s Movie Roster Has Some Very Varied Reviews, Especially In Recent Years
MCU Phase 5 Is Suffering The Most
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga seems trapped in a disappointing pattern, where each highly-acclaimed movie is followed by one that receives less positive feedback. This pattern has been ongoing, as demonstrated by the controversial “Captain America: Brave New World,” which came after the wildly popular “Deadpool & Wolverine.” However, it’s important to note that “Deadpool & Wolverine” was preceded by the MCU’s biggest box office disappointment, “The Marvels,” which, despite earning mixed reviews, I found quite enjoyable. This pattern is clearly reflected in the Multiverse Saga’s ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
MCU Multiverse Saga Movies Critical Reception | |||
---|---|---|---|
MCU Movie | Release Date | Critics’ Score | Audience Score |
Captain America: Brave New World | February 14, 2025 | 48% | 78% |
Deadpool & Wolverine | July 25, 2024 | 78% | 94% |
The Marvels | November 10, 2023 | 62% | 79% |
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | May 5, 2023 | 82% | 94% |
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania | February 17, 2023 | 46% | 81% |
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | November 11, 2022 | 84% | 94% |
Thor: Love and Thunder | July 8, 2022 | 63% | 76% |
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness | May 6, 2022 | 74% | 85% |
Spider-Man: No Way Home | December 17, 2021 | 93% | 97% |
Eternals | November 5, 2021 | 47% | 77% |
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | September 3, 2021 | 92% | 98% |
Black Widow | July 9, 2021 | 79% | 91% |
No Way Home currently holds the highest rating in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, but it doesn’t stand alone in this ranking, as another MCU Phase 4 film scored nearly as highly and hasn’t been granted a sequel yet.
Shang-Chi’s Place In The MCU’s Movie Ranking Reinforces The Idea It Needs A Sequel Sooner Rather Than Later
Audiences Rank Shang-Chi More Highly Than Spider-Man
The highly acclaimed film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, came close to matching the praise given to Spider-Man: No Way Home by critics, and even surpassed it slightly among audiences. Given its engaging, innovative, and hopeful take on a new MCU superhero, it’s no surprise that fans have been eagerly anticipating a sequel since its release. However, as of now, although there has been much demand for one, a sequel to the movie has not yet been confirmed, and it seems unlikely before the arrival of Avengers: Doomsday in May 2026.
It seems that the absence of Shang-Chi’s sequel might be primarily due to financial factors. Unlike Spider-Man, who has consistently proven his box office worth with movies like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” earning an impressive $1.9 billion worldwide, Shang-Chi’s global earnings were relatively lower at $430 million. However, given that Shang-Chi is a new character and has already made a strong impact, it would be wise for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to prioritize him and produce a sequel sooner rather than later to keep the character relevant in the MCU’s current atmosphere.
