In Mumbai’s filmmaker offices, international films are frequently referenced, but a trip to Rajkummar Gupta’s workspace is more like a journey into the golden age of Indian cinema. It’s surprising to encounter posters of Sholay and Deewar, the movies that sparked Rajkumar Gupta‘s passion for directing. With a sense of pride, he remarks, “Salim-Javed, those were brilliant writers.” As he prepares for Raid 2 with Ajay Devgn on May 1st, he guarantees an authentic follow-up. He’s succinct in saying, “We didn’t initially plan to make Raid 2 while making Raid.
Gupta mentions, “After our initial film became successful, there was a growing interest in delving deeper into the world and its characters. Our intention was to discover an engaging story and then craft a superb script. We devoted approximately one and a half years to the scriptwriting process. Once everyone appreciated what had been developed, Raid 2 emerged as our next project.
The filmmaker confirms that while Raid 2 is based on real incidents, it includes numerous fictional elements as well. He explains, “We took creative liberties with the storyline and introduced fresh characters for Raid 2.” He grins, noting, “That’s our approach for this movie.” Additionally, he shares that the casting process was organic and unforced. “Ritesh Shah, my co-writer, suggested reprising the role of Saurabh Shukla in Raid 2,” he adds.
Rajkummar Gupta assures that the narrative of the Raid sequel will carry a substantial thread of humor, similar to the original. “Raid 2 is filled with humor, and it’s rooted in reality,” he chuckles. The director praises his lead actor, Ajay Devgn, referring to him as an exceptional professional. “He’s an amazing actor who brings life to every scene as written on the script,” Gupta says. He also expresses admiration for Riteish Deshmukh, who takes on the antagonist role in this installment of Raid. “I’ve worked with him before, and he’s a talented actor,” Gupta remarks.
Is a third installment of the Raid series in development? When asked about this possibility, he replied, “It’s premature as we aim to tell an engaging story first and then gauge audience response. Whether or not Raid 2 has potential for a sequel will be determined.” He also mentioned that he hasn’t yet chosen his next project. “There are several scripts in the works, but we’ll see which one fits best.
2021 found me eagerly preparing for “Black Tiger” with Salman Khan as the main star. Regrettably, the project never materialized. As someone who’s been keeping you informed about the movie, I can confirm that it’s no longer in production. It was an engaging concept, one that I held the rights to, but when those rights expired, we found ourselves at an impasse. Consequently, I decided not to renew the rights and will not be involved with that film moving forward.
