14 Best The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered Mods

Modifications, often referred to as “mods,” are crucial elements in any new Elder Scrolls game or Bethesda title. Despite The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered not being entirely new nor developed by Bethesda Game Studios, it’s anticipated that a large and active modding community will develop around the game over time. As the game was only recently released, it’s still early days, but there are already several smaller-scale yet robust PC mods available for the remastered open-world action RPG on NexusMods. In this post, we’ll discuss a few top mods you can install for the enhanced Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered experience.

TECH IMPROVEMENTS

Upgrading Oblivion Remastered even more can be achieved by focusing on the Ultimate Engine Tweaks mod made by P40L0. This mod offers numerous visual and technical enhancements such as smoother frame rates, reduced lag, improved responsiveness in controls, enhanced DLSS and FSR upscaling, clearer images due to the elimination of chromatic aberration and film grain, and other benefits. The improvement is quite apparent.

RESHADE

The Ayleid Reshade mod offers an alternative visual style for Oblivion Remastered that is more vibrant and attention-grabbing compared to the original 2006 version’s aesthetic. This modification might appeal to those seeking a balance between the remake’s updated technical quality and a visual experience closer to the original game, albeit not an exact replica.

BETTER FOV

For a short while longer, focusing on technological advancements, you’ll find that, as usual, there’s a modification available enhancing the game’s field of view expanse. Using the Better FoV mod by Caites, you have the freedom to customize your field of view to any value within a span of 60 to 140. In stark contrast, without the mod, Oblivion Remastered limits the field of view range between 70 and 100.

INVENTORY

Managing inventory in Bethesda RPGs can be quite a hassle due to how quickly you reach your maximum carrying capacity. Fortunately, there’s a mod that helps alleviate this issue in an amusingly innovative way. NexusMod user Erok’s Carry Weight Modifier mod works by altering the weight value of a single lockpick; when you carry more lockpicks, your inventory capacity increases. So hoard lockpicks and take as much loot as you want without worrying about exceeding your limit!

LOCKPICKS AND REPAIRS

If you’re looking for a simpler way to acquire more lockpicks and repair hammers in your game, check out IxionXVII’s “More Lockpicks and Repair Hammers” mod. This modification either doubles or quadruples the number of these items you can find throughout the game world, depending on which version you select. An additional version extends this benefit by making lockpicks and repair hammers findable in crates and barrels as well.

HORSEBACK TRAVERSAL

Occasionally, minor modifications can prove incredibly beneficial, and the Simple Faster Horses mod by StefN appears to be just that, particularly if horseback riding is your preferred method of navigating Cyrodiil. As its name implies, this mod enhances the speed of the game’s horses, boosting their movement speed by 10 units. Consequently, you should observe a significant improvement in horse travel speed.

MORE HORSE IMPROVEMENTS

Regarding horses, there’s a modification called “Horse Whistle” by PushTheWinButton that enhances the horse interaction within the game “Oblivion Remastered”. Normally, having the ability to call your horse would be expected without mods, but this one ensures you can do so. Moreover, it offers an extra function where your horse will follow you when you’re moving on foot, making your gaming experience more immersive.

QUEST NPCs

In some video games, it can be quite frustrating when you’re stuck following NPCs who move at a snail’s pace during quests, forcing you to slow down too. However, the Elder Scrolls modding community always comes through, and there’s a solution for this issue. The Quest NPCs Run mod by NexusMod user Dispensation speeds up NPCs and companions in certain quests so they run instead of walk when you’re with them. It might appear less polished, but let’s face it, Oblivion is already quite a janky game, so who cares?

NPCs LEVEL CAPS

In the newly released remaster, Oblivion’s infamous level scaling issues have been significantly improved, but some residual problems persist. The Balanced NPC Level Cap mod by PusTheWinButton targets some of these leftover challenges, primarily by setting maximum levels for every non-player character in the game. Once this mod is installed, even if your character level increases dramatically, the NPCs will no longer advance beyond a certain point.

ITEM AND CREATURE SPAWNING

As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share another fantastic modification, this time crafted by the talented NexusMods user PushTheWinButton. This mod aims squarely at the level scaling issues that have long been a part of Oblivion’s gameplay experience.

In the original version of the game, high-level enemies and items stop appearing as you progress, but the Leveled Creature and Item Diversity mod rectifies this problem by reintroducing those lower level adversaries and loot into the game world.

NPCs ON FIRE

To put it simply, this mod called “SpiderAkira’s NPCs Catch Fire” is designed to bring a touch of unpredictability to your Elder Scrolls gameplay. The name says it all; once installed, non-player characters (NPCs) will ignite when they are near flames, adding an exciting and entertaining element to the game.

RICH VENDORS

In the game ‘Oblivion’, it can be tricky to sell your inventory items to vendors as they only have a limited amount of gold to pay you with. Even if you have numerous valuable items, if they’ve run out of funds, you won’t receive anything in return. But with Erok’s Richer Vendors mod, every vendor in the game is either endowed with 1000 gold or ten times richer than their original vanilla game counterparts, whichever is greater. This way, you can sell your items more easily without worrying about vendors running out of money.

HUD IMPROVEMENTS

In Oblivion Remastered, significant advancements have been made to the HUD and UI compared to the original games, but there’s still room for further enhancements using Caites’ Better HUD mod. This mod moves the compass, health, mana, and stamina bars towards the screen edges, shrinks the compass by 60%, positions the gauges vertically in the left corner, reduces the visibility of status symbols, and it works with various aspect ratios.

DIFFICULTY CHANGES

In the updated version of Oblivion Remastered, instead of manually adjusting game settings with sliders as in the original, it offers preset difficulty levels. While this generally works well, some inconsistencies are noticeable in the damage multipliers across these levels. To address this issue, a mod named IxionXVII’s Difficulty Slider Fixed has been developed to finely tune the multipliers for a smoother jump experience. The good news is that, at least at this stage, this mod doesn’t interfere with the game’s achievements.
