On HBO and Max, Nathan Fielder is working diligently to eliminate all instances of air disasters. However, the show The Rehearsal has momentarily veered into criticizing Paramount.
During the latest installment of “The Rehearsal,” Fielder disclosed a discussion he held with Paramount following the realization that Paramount+ had taken down a 2015 episode from his show “Nathan for You,” which originally broadcast on Comedy Central, one of Paramount Global’s cable networks.
In this rephrased sentence, I aimed to maintain the original meaning while making it more conversational and easy-to-read.
In the second episode of season three of the show “Nathan for You,” entitled “Horseback Riding/Man Zone,” after the jacket company Taiga, based in Vancouver, paid tribute to Doug Collins, a Holocaust denier, Nathan Fielder creates a genuine winter clothing line called Summit Ice. Notably, Fielder is also from Vancouver and Taiga markets its garments as being “German-engineered” and “Canadian-made.”
In the second episode of season three titled “Horseback Riding/Man Zone,” on the show “Nathan for You,” Nathan Fielder, who hails from Vancouver, initiates a real winter clothing line called Summit Ice following Taiga’s tribute to Doug Collins, a known Holocaust denier. The company Taiga, based in Vancouver, boasts that its clothing is both “German-engineered” and “Canadian-made.
Initially starting as a casual joke, Fielder’s venture, Summit Ice, has turned out to be a genuine brand. All its earnings are donated to the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in Vancouver. Fielder, who is Jewish, shares that sales since 2015 have accumulated “millions of dollars” for this cause.
Or:
Originally started as a casual jest, Summit Ice – Fielder’s brand – has become a legitimate entity. Instead of pocketing its profits, it donates all its earnings to the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre in Vancouver. Fielder, being Jewish, mentions that sales since 2015 have contributed “millions of dollars” towards this cause.
In the second episode of season two on “The Rehearsal,” Fielder refers to Summit Ice as his most significant accomplishment and explains that it aligns with the declared objective for this current season, demonstrating how even a comedy series can have an impact. This specific season of the show, as it turns out, has seen Fielder employing his signature intricate scenarios (and a substantial amount of HBO funding) to apparently equip co-pilots with the courage to challenge captains during potentially hazardous flight situations.
Currently, Summit Ice is actively promoting (both information and funds) despite their origin show not being accessible for streaming yet.
By the end of 2023, I found out that the Nathan for You episode involving the Summit Ice tale inexplicably vanished from the Paramount+ streaming platform,” Fielder mentioned on The Rehearsal.
Fielder reached out to “certain individuals he knew at Paramount,” and finding the right balance in his communication was “challenging,” as he put it.
Fielder explained that there’s a catch – Paramount is currently broadcasting another show of his, but it’s not yet been renewed for another season (it could be canceled too). He mentioned this was ‘The Curse’, airing on Showtime, which is also owned by Paramount. He added that discussing the situation with them might impact his career.
In a similar vein, Fielder suggests, it’s somewhat analogous to a co-pilot taking control from their captain. It’s a bit of a reach, but the comparison holds.
Fielder recounted that he had aimed to express the urgency of the matter while maintaining a polite tone, employing phrases such as ‘Ever grateful’ and ‘Season’s Greetings.’ As he scrolled through his old emails, he said this. To illustrate the awkwardness of the situation, an actor was hired to reenact it, standing over Fielder’s shoulder. This method is sometimes referred to as The Fielder Method.
According to the emails, Paramount informed Fielder that the Summit Ice episode was deliberately removed due to certain sensitive issues. This decision came from Paramount+ in Germany, where executives felt uneasy about anything that could be linked to antisemitism, given the recent Israel/Hamas conflict.
It was a local decision that soon went global.
In due time, the philosophy of Paramount+ Germany became global, expunging any Jewish content that discomforted them, as Fielder notes. He emphasizes, “This isn’t just hypothetical.
Indeed, Fielder’s statement is accurate – the Summit Ice episode isn’t available for streaming on Paramount+. A representative from Paramount confirmed this after conducting a review of their content standards, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Fielder noted that as of now, the Paramount app has 50 search results for ‘nazi,’ 10 for ‘Hitler,’ but none for ‘Judaism.’ He expressed, ‘We’ve been omitted.’
THR repeated the same searches, and Fielder’s assessment seems accurate, with a few exceptions. The “nazi” search, however, brought up some children’s shows that have no connection to Nazis, indicating that the system is not flawless. A search for “jew,” on the other hand, returned four results.
In last night’s episode of “The Rehearsal,” Fielder ventured into an exaggerated setup that resembled his assumption of the Paramount Germany offices. This allowed him an opportunity to articulate more confidently the thoughts that were somewhat held back in his previous, hesitant emails.
