Shogun Emmy Winner Anna Sawai Joins DCU Lex Luthor in New Bank Heist Movie

The casting list for ‘How to Rob a Bank’ has expanded with the inclusion of Anna Sawai, a talented actress who earned numerous acting accolades for her role as Toda Mariko in FX’s ‘Shogun’. She is now set to appear alongside other actors in the upcoming bank heist film.

At present, specific details about Sawai’s character are being kept secret. She has been added to the cast that already includes Nicholas Hoult, who is set to play Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman project, and Pete Davidson, a former Saturday Night Live member. As for the plot of How to Rob a Bank, it currently remains undisclosed. However, given that it will be directed by David Leitch, we can expect it to follow the action-comedy style seen in movies like Bullet Train and The Fall Guy.

In February 2025, it was first announced that “How to Pull Off a Heist” was in development, serving as director Drew Leitch’s follow-up project after his 2024 action rom-com “The Stuntman,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Since making a name for himself as an uncredited director on “John Wick” (2014) alongside Chad Stahelski, who has also gained significant recognition, Leitch’s demand has been high. Apart from “How to Pull Off a Heist,” there are rumors that he may work on additional projects, although the details of these potential collaborations have not yet been officially confirmed.

Anna Sawai Heading Back to the MonsterVerse

In the year 2024, Shōgun catapulted Sawai to fame and multiple awards, earning a Golden Globe, SAG, and Emmy in each category she was nominated for. Yet, prior to the debut of her historical drama series on FX, Sawai had already gained recognition for her lead role in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which streamed on Apple TV+.

Following the events of the 2014 movie “Godzilla,” and delving into the past for two generations, the MonsterVerse series unfolds the adventures of members from the Monarch organization as they cross paths with Godzilla and other colossal creatures known as Titans. A second season was confirmed in April 2024, with filming scheduled from July 2024 to February 2025. Additionally, several spinoff series based on Monarch are currently being developed.

Amazon Prime Video, famous for its action series such as Bosch, Cross, and Reacher, is also focusing on expanding its collection of action films for the cinema. At present, they are producing a live-action remake of Masters of the Universe, with rumors suggesting that Henry Cavill might be cast in the lead role. If everything falls into place, Scott Stuber from Amazon MGM will take up the producer’s position for this project.

The heads of state, in their roles as the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, will appear earlier than both ‘Masters of the Universe’ and ‘Highlander’. This is in reference to a new action-comedy titled ‘Heads of a State’, which is set to premiere on July 2nd on Prime Video. Later this year, Amazon MGM Studios will distribute another Christmas action-comedy called ‘The Man with the Bag’.

How to Rob a Bank remains undated at this time, but is expected to receive a theatrical release.
