The upcoming animated movie by Oscar-nominated Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda titled “Scarlet” is set to debut in North American cinemas on December 12. This date falls within the profitable timeframe of the year-end holidays and the center of awards season.
On Monday, Sony Pictures, collaborating on production and finance with Studio Chizu and Nippon TV, disclosed the film’s release date. In the U.S. and internationally, Sony will be responsible for distribution, while in Japan, Toho will manage the movie’s theatrical releases.
Scarlet tells the story of a brave princess who transcends time and space.
Hosoda’s works span films such as ‘Belle’, ‘Wolf Children’, and the 2018 release ‘Mirai’. The latter, initially screened at the Cannes Film Festival, was later nominated for an Oscar in the category of best animated feature.
Yuichiro Saito and Nozom Takahashi from Studio Chizu, along with Toshimi Tanio of Nippon TV, are collaboratively working on the production of “Scarlet“.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight that the visionary behind Studio Chizu, Hosoda, is not just its founder but also a master storyteller. Many of his enchanting films have been born from observing his children play and his deep-seated fascination with family relationships, as seen in his works such as The Boy and the Beast (2015) and Wolf Children (2012).
