As a gamer, I feel like I just scored a four-term victory in the Canadian parliamentary elections, led by none other than the sharp-eyed central banker and businessman Mark Carney, following a sudden call for an election sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump‘s potential takeover threats against our nation.
On Monday evening, significant Canadian broadcasts such as CBC, CTV, and Global News made predictions that the Liberals would form the upcoming government around 10 p.m., following the closure of polls in British Columbia. However, these decision desks were hesitant to predict whether Carney, who was elected as Canada’s new leader, would secure a majority for his Liberals or end up with a minority government that would require coalition partners to govern effectively.
Despite early indications suggesting a significant victory for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party, an unexpected shift occurred among Canadian voters. Instead of electing a new government led by Poilievre’s party, they chose to re-elect Carney and the Liberals following their concerns about Donald Trump’s trade disputes.
After the resignation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to allow Carney to take over, the Liberals regained favor with Canadian voters. At this time, Trump initiated a series of aggressive trade policies towards Canada. This situation sparked a wave of Canadian nationalism, symbolized by an “elbows up” moment – a term originating from ice hockey, where players raise their fists to defend themselves.
In a manner befitting his past roles as head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Carney appears poised to emerge victorious in the election. This is likely due to Canadians’ perception that he is the most capable of safeguarding Canada during interactions with U.S. President Trump, especially during upcoming U.S.-Canada trade negotiations.
During the campaign, Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, experienced a significant drop in popularity among Canadians who felt he resembled Trump, the U.S. President, too closely. This perception was likely strengthened as Trump targeted Canada economically.
Poilievre consistently encountered criticism for failing to shift focus from his aggressive campaign against Carney, instead of directing his attacks towards Trump and the tariffs during an election campaign that was increasingly centered around Trump’s global trade conflict.
On Monday morning, Trump once again expressed on his social media platform Truth Social his suggestion that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. This prompted Poilievre to urge caution, advising Trump not to provoke Canada in this manner. “Donald Trump, keep your hands off our election… Canada will remain steadfastly sovereign and independent, and we will never become the 51st state,” the Conservative leader emphasized in his post.
On Monday, Carney too voiced his thoughts on the platform X, reassuring Canadians who were anxious about Trump’s threats of annexation: “It is our choice what transpires. Let us opt for unity and strength instead.
