Caution: Potential spoilers for Doctor Who season 15, episode 3 titled “The Well.” Anita Dobson’s character, Mrs. Flood, first appeared in the 2023 Doctor Who Christmas special. Since then, I’ve developed a theory that Mrs. Flood might share a hidden link with the Doctor similar to Sutekh and Susan Triad (Susan Twist). Throughout season 15, Mrs. Flood has been subtly present in the cast without any clear reason as to why she is tracking the Doctor across time and space. After a year since the conclusion of Doctor Who season 14 in 2024, I believe I’ve pieced together the puzzle.
Russell T. Davies, the showrunner for “Doctor Who”, had hinted before the commencement of season 15 that Mrs. Flood would feature in every episode. This implies that the enigma surrounding her since her introduction would gradually unfold. Although the reason behind her presence is more intriguing than clear in the opening episodes of season 15, I’ve been developing a theory about Mrs. Flood that has a strong chance of being accurate. It revolves around “Doctor Who’s” Pantheon of Gods and its potential link to the Doctor.
The Doctor Could Be One Of Doctor Who’s Pantheon Gods
Doctor Who’s main character as the God of Life makes so much sense
To completely understand my idea about Mrs. Flood, it’s crucial to delve into the role of the Doctor as well, since this exploration fuels further discussion. I suspect that the Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa at present, might be connected to the Pantheon. Yet, if he is, his awareness seems absent. The Timeless Child storyline introduced by Chris Chibnall, featuring Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, rewrote the Time Lord history so that they came from beyond the universe, falling through a gap in reality and ending up on Gallifrey. Prior to becoming William Hartnell’s First Doctor, this character had their memory erased.
Jodie Whittaker’s portrayal of Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor has mentioned the origin of the Pantheon a few times, describing it as being “outside the universe.” Although he may not recall his earliest experiences now, it is officially established that the Doctor hails from another universe as well. Given that the Doctor frequently clashes with the Pantheon and usually emerges victorious, it’s plausible to infer that his power derives from being part of the same collective of characters as the Toymaker, Maestro, and other confirmed members of the Pantheon.
If the character, the Doctor, is part of the Pantheon, the ideal role he could assume is that of the Deity of Life. Not only does his constant exploration of space and time align with this notion, but there’s another characteristic that bolsters this theory. Essentially, it’s the ability to regenerate, a power that, according to the Timeless Child storyline, originated with the Doctor and was subsequently adopted by the Time Lords. The recurring capacity to defy death could undeniably be an apt emblem of a Deity of Life.
Mrs. Flood Is Acting A Lot Like Doctor Who Season 14’s Susan Triads
Dobson’s Doctor Who character seems to be following in the footsteps of Sutekh’s Angels
Although we haven’t made much progress unraveling Mrs. Flood’s enigma thus far, there are striking resemblances to a character from Gatwa’s early seasons as the Fifteenth Doctor – Susan Twist. This intriguing figure cropped up throughout Doctor Who season 14, and each appearance saw her in a completely transformed state. Even when she seemed identical, there were distinguishing factors that set them apart, such as settings in the distant future or past that would have been impossible for human characters to occupy simultaneously if Susan Twist were merely human.
Given Susan Twist’s revelation as Sutekh’s Angels of Death, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to speculate that Davies might be hinting at a similar twist for Dobson’s character. Unlike the Susans who were oblivious to their true identities until activated by Sutekh, Mrs. Flood seems intent on pursuing the Doctor as he tries to return Belinda (Varada Sethu) to Earth.
Has The Doctor Accidentally Created Mrs. Flood As His “Angel Of Life”?
Fifteen may not know he is responsible for Mrs. Flood’s presence
Based on the notion that the Doctor, like a deity over life, adheres to the same principles and idiosyncrasies as the other gods we’ve encountered so far, it is plausible that he possesses the power to summon beings associated with life, much like Sutekh’s ability to conjure Angel(s) of Death. Interestingly, these beings of life could be what the Doctor is manifesting, given his close relationship with life and death. This theory isn’t too far-fetched considering how closely intertwined these concepts are.
It seems that, just like Susan Triad and her counterparts, Mrs. Flood appears to be operating independently, suggesting that each instance of Mrs. Flood might be unique. If the Doctor is indeed the embodiment of life itself, then it’s plausible that he could manifest a version of Mrs. Flood wherever he lands the TARDIS, similar to Sutekh’s Angels of Death. Just as all the Susans weren’t dangerous until they were summoned, the Doctor may hold a significant advantage when he decides to summon all the Mrs. Floods in the future.
What Mrs. Flood Being An Angel Of Life Means For Doctor Who Season 15
Mrs. Flood clearly has a major role in the upcoming chaos
Mrs. Flood frequently engages with the audience, which is one of her defining characteristics. Among all the self-referential instances during Doctor Who‘s Disney period, the scenes where Dobson’s character speaks directly to the viewers are particularly striking. It’s evident that she knows a great deal about the Doctor and his TARDIS, and the show has hinted that Mrs. Flood may have been tracking the Doctor’s companions since the beginning. If this turns out to be true, it would explain many things, making her character incredibly significant.
The key moment for Mrs. Flood so far is her statement that the Doctor’s time is finite, ending on May 24. Given her frequent references to things she shouldn’t know about, it might be a reference to the show “Doctor Who.” Regardless, May 24 marks the airing of “Wish World,” which is the second-to-last episode of season 15. Therefore, we can expect that Mrs. Flood’s background and intentions will be clarified in “Wish World,” making for a thrilling conclusion to the fifteenth season of “Doctor Who.
