Sohum Shah’s movie “Crazzy” left viewers breathless throughout its entirety, thanks to its nail-biting suspense and outstanding acting. Following the re-release success of “Tumbbad,” “Crazzy” served as another impressive demonstration of Sohum’s talent. Each scene is carefully designed, but it’s the tire-changing sequence that everyone’s been raving about.
In this memorable segment of the movie, the tension is significantly heightened, sparking conversations everywhere. This outstanding sequence, masterfully crafted by Girish Kohli, showcases both precision and commitment, introducing an exceptional element of suspense. Here are some fascinating tidbits about this exhilarating, critically acclaimed moment in the film!
1. Epic in Length: An 18-Page Script Scene
In the production, Crazzy incorporated a lengthy and demanding tire-changing sequence that lasted more than 12 minutes. This scene was extensively detailed in the script, spanning an impressive 18 pages. The execution of this sequence involved a range of tasks including applying prosthetics, filming various angles of Sohum, and operating two cameras at once. Given its complexity, a meticulous strategy was necessary to ensure a flawless performance. The script also provided specific instructions regarding shot lengths, whether it be a brief or extended take.
2. Four Days to Shoot the Perfect Tyre-Change Scene
To ensure the tire-changing scene was flawless, it required four days to film. During production, two cameras were continuously recording, but they were set up differently for various parts of the scene. Initially, there was a lot of handheld camera work, but as soon as the ant-hole sequence started, both cameras remained stationary.
One camera was strategically positioned to maintain an ant hill in the front, providing a broad view that included Sohum and his car in the background using a wide-angle lens. This setup essentially established a comprehensive shot, often referred to as a master shot. Meanwhile, another camera was specifically focused on capturing Sohum’s profile. Coordinating these two cameras without obstructing their movements proved to be a significant hurdle.
3. 10-Minute One-Shot: A Seamless Filming Feat
The tire-changing sequence showcases a continuous 10-minute shot that chronicles Dr. Abhimanyu Sood’s (portrayed by Sohum Shah) actions, from extracting a nut bolt from an anthill to repairing the tire, receiving a call from a loan agent, and eventually getting into the car and driving away – all of which were flawlessly performed in a single take.
4. Three Locations, One Epic Scene
The process of changing tires was captured over three distinct settings: a wind farm, a studio, and an additional studio on the third day for filming the interior of an ant hill. Despite this, the final footage appears as if it was all shot continuously without any breaks, thanks to skillful editing. The tire change scene itself was filmed at the wind farm, while the surgery and interiors of the ant hole were both shot inside studios.
5. A Real Surgeon’s Expertise Elevated the Scene
An actual surgeon instructed the actors on performing operations and stayed on set to oversee and verify that every aspect was carried out precisely. In addition, both the dialogue and the medical process were checked by another surgeon to maintain authenticity without sacrificing accuracy.
6. A Year and a Half to Get the Surgery Prosthetics Just Right
For Crazzy, the process of acquiring a prosthesis was a prolonged one. At first, they teamed up with Dhuri, a skilled prosthetic artist from Chandigarh who had previously worked on Tumbbad. They also considered various artists from India, the UK (who had experience working on Game of Thrones), and South Africa. They even went so far as to import a skin sample for testing different silicone textures for the prosthetic body. However, logistical challenges led to considerable setbacks in the timeline.
Over time, the team made their way back to Dhuri, where they repeatedly refined the design of the prosthetic body and organs. Girish had a specific request – he wanted the body to have a sun-kissed appearance. This led to various trials, such as charring the prosthetic from afar, but unfortunately, it became overly darkened and damaged, prompting last-minute adjustments using makeup and paint. The process of refining these prosthetics for the surgical scene took over a year and involved traveling extensively around the world.
