It’s being widely discussed in the gaming community that Bungie may cease support for the older console versions of Destiny 2 this year. Many players have been eagerly waiting for this transition, questioning when the game would leave behind outdated hardware, particularly as its performance has consistently fallen short of ideal levels.
One key point to note is that the upcoming expansion, “The Edge of Fate,” might mark the time when Bungie stops supporting PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. However, this could indicate a significant transition for the franchise as Bungie moves towards better graphical quality and performance using its Tiger Engine.
For almost a decade, Destiny 2 has been playable on older generation platforms. Given that the PlayStation 4 is nearing its 12th year, it’s becoming more challenging for game developers to sustain high-performance and visual standards on outdated technology. Bungie, like many others, is finding this a challenge as well.
Some players have noted that this new content, Edge of Fate, could mirror the transition experienced by Rise of Iron, an expansion which signified the end of support for Destiny 1 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In 2016, Rise of Iron shifted exclusively to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It’s possible that Edge of Fate may adopt a similar course.
The upcoming expansion for Edge of Fate, which is Destiny 2‘s ninth major release following The Final Shape, has fans speculating about its potential storyline. It’s rumored that this chapter could transport us beyond the Sol System, perhaps liberating our Guardians from the confines of the Sol System and into completely unexplored realms. With the Witness defeated, advancing the narrative is a crucial juncture, and it may necessitate technical enhancements to deliver an appropriate experience.
In other words, it’s not unusual for Bungie’s looter-shooter game to follow the trend of phasing out support for older generation consoles. Games such as The First Descendant have begun to move away from outdated hardware, opting instead for next-generation platforms like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
