Pope Francis passed away on April 21, just the day before the Conclave started streaming on Amazon Prime Video (though it had departed from Peacock a few weeks prior). However, there was another film centered around popes that became popular among streaming viewers – and it soared on Netflix.
The Two Popes, the 2019 Academy Award-winning movie detailing the bond between Pope Francis (Jonathan Pryce) and his former Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins), reappeared in Netflix’s top listings. The film saw its viewership soar over 30 times more than the previous week, according to Netflix, as Pope Francis was unwell but still alive at that time.
Between April 21st and April 27th, the movie “The Two Popes” climbed to the top 10 on Netflix in 27 different countries, accumulating a total of 3.2 million views worldwide.
Last week, our view count placed us at 8th among all English-language films on Netflix. The movie starring Tom Hardy, titled ‘Havoc’, claimed the top spot with a staggering 29.8 million views in its initial three days. This surpassed the TV sensation ‘You’ season 5’s premiere viewership by almost triple, which stood at 10.1 million views over four days. The latest season of ‘You’ made its comeback, pushing its debut season back onto the list for the first time since February 2023, securing a spot at number 10. Interestingly, ‘You’ season one was the only season that originally aired on Lifetime.
We attempted to obtain Conclave’s viewership figures for the same week from Prime Video, but they have yet to respond. Unlike Netflix, Amazon tends to keep its data private, and Nielsen’s streaming ratings are based on a four-week timeframe.
