In the world of “Star Trek,” the friendship between Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) is considered one of the most memorable, but it wasn’t formally recognized until the fourth season of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (TNG). While TNG was primarily about Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D’s voyages, Data’s journey in “Star Trek” evolved into one of the show’s most captivating ongoing narratives. As an incredibly sophisticated android, Data spent much of TNG’s seven seasons seeking his own interpretation of humanity.
Among all crew members, it was Geordi who played a significant role in guiding Data through the complexities and paradoxes of being human, while also assisting with his mechanical issues as Chief Engineer on the Enterprise-D. Their intellectual prowess and shared engineering expertise often led to them working together effectively, even rescuing the ship on numerous occasions. Although it wasn’t until TNG season 4, episode 11, “Data’s Day,” that their friendship was formally acknowledged, their bond had been apparent from the series’ early episodes.

Data Officially Dubs Geordi La Forge His Best Friend In “Data’s Day”
The day in Data’s life starts with him dictating a letter to Dr. Bruce Maddox, who previously visited the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 9, “The Measure of a Man.” Originally intending to disassemble Data, Maddox changed his perspective after their trial and they started exchanging letters. In this letter, Data informs Maddox that he will document his daily activities on the Enterprise, focusing especially on his feelings about friendship.
Data finds a unique bond with several of his shipmates, but it’s Geordi La Forge who earns the title of Data’s “closest companion.” Whenever Data encounters questions about human interactions, he turns to Geordi for guidance. In the episode titled “Data’s Day,” Data playfully calls Geordi a “goofball,” admitting that he’s trying out friendly banter and jests. Data feels comfortable with Geordi, as he can express himself freely without worrying about offending or upsetting his friend. Ultimately, Data acknowledges that humans’ innate desire for friendship is something he too can comprehend.
Data & Geordi Is Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Most Definitive Friendship
Data & Geordi Are The Spock & Kirk Of TNG
Data might not have publicly declared Geordi as his “best friend” until “Data’s Day,” but it was clear from the start that they were friends. They frequently appear together in scenes on Star Trek: The Next Generation, revealing their mutual respect and affection. They often spend their leisure time engaged in activities such as playing detective characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the holodeck, or pondering life’s profound questions. This friendship between Data and Geordi is reminiscent of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from Star Trek: The Original Series.
Despite Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) developing a close bond with Captain Jean-Luc Picard by the time of “Star Trek: Picard,” Picard did not seem to have a best friend during his tenure on the USS Enterprise in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Instead, he maintained some distance from his crew. However, in “Picard” season 3, Data and Geordi La Forge reconnected, and it’s expected that Geordi will continue to assist his upgraded android friend as he navigates his new human emotions. Over the course of their interactions, both Data and Geordi grew to understand more about what it means to be human, forming a deep friendship reminiscent of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock’s bond in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.
