10 Ice-Types NEED Mega Evolutions

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that we’re reintroducing Mega Evolutions in the game, which opens up possibilities for fresh Mega Evolutions! There are numerous compelling candidates for this transformation, but one significant advantage is that it broadens the range of Pokémon types eligible for Mega Evolution.

Among the 48 Pokemon capable of undergoing Mega Evolution at present, merely two belong to the Ice type, which is quite under-represented considering the scarcity of Ice-types overall. The Ice type poses a challenge defensively due to its four weaknesses; however, it compensates by being powerful against four types, including the elusive Dragon type that’s tricky to hit. Many Ice-type Pokemon could benefit from the power enhancement offered by a Mega form.

Weavile’s Abilities: Pressure/Pickpocket

Among the numerous single-stage Generation 2 Pokemon that received new evolutions in Generation 4, Sneasel was one often considered underwhelming. However, with its evolution into Weavile, it has gained a fresh lease on life, as this Pokemon exudes an air of swiftness and danger. Unfortunately, Weavile didn’t receive the same attention as other Generation 4 Pokemon in Legends: Arceus, being only accessible through Space-Time distortions rather than regular encounters. In contrast, its ancestor, Sneasler, played a significant role in the game’s storyline.

Developing a Mega Evolution for Weavile would bring it back into the limelight. This evolutionary stage could highlight Weavile’s Ice-type traits even further, perhaps by adding ice spikes and claws, or even an imposing dark aura. Given that Weavile’s design is quite basic, there’s ample opportunity to enhance it and create a more impressive, powerful form.

Cetitan’s Abilities: Thick Fat/Slush Rush/Sheer Force

In the Paldea Pokédex, four completely evolved Ice-type Pokémons were presented, including a Paradox Pokémon and a Legendary one, neither of which are expected to receive Mega Evolutions. The region’s pseudo-legendary is Baxcalibur, with high chances of obtaining a Mega Evolution but also being predictable in this regard. Consequently, Cetitan stands out as an excellent prospect for a potential Mega Evolution.

Exploring the concept of a killer whale on land offers numerous possibilities, particularly when considering the Mega Evolution of Cetoddle. Just as Cetitan retains its adorable, spherical form, this Mega transformation could amplify its strength even further. As a pure Ice-type Pokémon, a Mega evolution could provide an opportunity to introduce a secondary typing.

Since it can learn many Ground moves through TM and being labeled as the “Terra Whale” Pokémon, it seems fitting that Ground would complement its abilities well. However, with an overhauled move set, Steel and Fighting types could also align with the notion of a powerful land orca in its Mega form.

Frosmoth’s Abilities: Shield Dust/Ice Scales

Despite Snom being more popular due to its cute bean shape and amusing name, Frosmoth has distinct advantages in its own right. Notably, Frosmoth possesses an impressive base Special Attack of 125, which could make it formidable if augmented by a Mega Evolution. However, a single Fire-type attack can swiftly dismantle Frosmoth as effortlessly as fire would melt a snow moth.

Instead of making Frosmoth’s 4x weakness a game-breaking issue, we can imagine its Mega Evolution enhancing its Special Attack and Speed significantly, but not to an extreme level that disrupts the game balance. As for its appearance, drawing inspiration from Volcarona or Mega Steelix, we could visualize Frosmoth adorned with swirling ice shards, adding a more dynamic and striking aspect to its already delicate design.

Walrein’s Abilities: Thick Fat/Ice Body/Oblivious

In contrast to its adorable pre-evolution Spheal, Walrein often gets overshadowed due to its appearance being less appealing to many Pokemon trainers. However, a Mega Evolution could rekindle Walrein’s popularity and transform it into a sturdy, formidable tank, particularly if the Mega enhancement prioritizes strengthening Walrein’s existing robust defensive attributes, thereby enhancing its ability to absorb damage even more effectively.

In terms of aesthetics, it would be logical to expand upon Walrein’s foliage, much like Mega Ampharos and Mega Abomasnow. Perhaps its appearance could be transformed to resemble a frosted waterfall cascading over its body, or maybe Walrein could grow even larger, embodying the idea of something that can deliver a powerful impact without so much as flinching.

Lapras’ Abilities: Water Absorb/Shell Armor/Hydration

Lapras, not Articuno, is the iconic Pokemon of Kanto. In the Kanto games and also in X and Y, it serves as a gift to players who can ride on it while surfing. Unlike other underwater Pokemons which appear only as dark blurs, players can clearly see Lapras. It would be great if Lapras received some attention in Legends: Z-A, perhaps through a new Mega Evolution.

In essence, Lapras’s Gigantamax form primarily enlarged the character but added musical flourishes, leaving ample opportunity for a Mega transformation to appear distinctive. A creative approach could involve highlighting Lapras’s resemblance to a plesiosaurus and emphasizing its potentially menacing aspect, much like the depiction of Lapras by Ken Sugimori in the Red and Blue versions, where it is shown baring its fangs. Over the years, Lapras has been portrayed as a gentle Pokémon that needs protection; therefore, showcasing its power would be an unexpected change.

Aurorus’ Abilities: Refrigerate/Snow Warning

Considering that Aurorus is a fossil discovered in the region of Kalos, it would be quite exciting if Game Freak chose to follow a similar pattern as Mega Aerodactyl and create Mega Aurorus as the “ancestral” form of the Pokémon. Aurorus might shed its Rock-type affiliation, instead adopting either Normal, Fairy, or Psychic-types, and perhaps its design could incorporate more feathers to reflect advancements in paleontology since the games were first introduced.

In earlier generations, all fossil Pokémon were Rock-type, which restricts Amaura and Aurorus from fully realizing their capabilities, as a different typing would benefit Aurorus more. Moreover, Aurorus is one of the exceptional fossil Pokémon, so it would be exciting to see it receive a new design that enhances its existing stunning appearance.

Crabominable’s Abilities: Hyper Cutter/Iron Fist/Anger Point

In Alola, there are many excellent Ice-type Pokemon, but most of them are variations of existing ones, making them less likely for Mega Evolution. However, Crabominable, an original Alolan Ice-type, could step up in the Mega Evolution field for Gen 7. This Pokemon needs more focus as it’s currently underserved compared to other generations. Right now, Wooly Crab Pokemon boasts a powerful Base Attack of 132 but is hindered by its poor speed.

There are two choices for altering Crabominable’s statistical distribution: either making it swifter or beefier. If we make Crabominable quicker, its poor defensive type becomes less important since it can outpace and defeat an adversary before the opponent even has a chance to move. On the other hand, if we make Crabominable sturdier, it stands a better chance of withstanding powerful moves, allowing it to continue attacking its foes. Given Crabominable’s current statistical distribution, making it beefier is likely the more sensible decision, but it would be quite amusing to watch this rotund crab scamper swiftly across the battlefield and clobber an opponent!

Mamoswine’s Abilities: Oblivious/Snow Cloak/Thick Fat

Among the impressive new evolutions introduced in Gen IV, Mamoswine stands out, though its evolution process can be challenging. To transform a Piloswine into a Mamoswine, you need to level it up while it already knows Ancient Power. In terms of defense, Mamoswine is a towering, shaggy mammoth-like Pokémon that acts like an unyielding fortress, particularly with its hidden ability, Thick Fat.

Instead of making Mega Mamoswine flashy or elaborate, it could simply be a larger, enhanced version of Mamoswine in terms of stats and appearance. As winter approaches, Mamoswine’s ice tusks become longer, thicker, and more magnificent – this should be the direction for Mega Mamoswine’s design.

Beartic’s Abilities: Snow Cloak/Slush Rush/ Swift Swim

It’s more fitting for Mega Beartic to possess the Water-type. While it’s true that Water/Ice is a common combination, consider Beartic’s hidden ability, Swift Swim. Since all the Water-type moves it learns, along with its numerous Pokédex entries mentioning it swimming through cold northern seas, make Water a suitable secondary type. In reality, polar bears have webbed paws to aid in swimming and hunting seals, so incorporating this feature into Mega Beartic’s design could create an interesting connection.

Through Mega Evolution, Beartic might transform into a larger, quadrupedal form, similar to how Ursaring evolves into Ursaluna. It’s intriguing that there aren’t many Pokémon modeled after polar bears, but a Mega Evolution for Beartic could offer an opportunity to create a fresh design. This new Mega Evolution might enhance Beartic’s usability as a Pokémon in battles.

Glaceon’s Abilities: Snow Cloak/Ice Body

The challenge with granting Mega Evolution to Glaceon is that every Eevee evolution would require one as well, for the sake of game fairness. Yet, I believe this trade-off is worth it, given how exceptional the Eeveelutions are and especially because Glaceon could greatly benefit from such an upgrade. Despite having a striking appearance, Glaceon isn’t the most practical Eevee evolution or even the strongest Ice-type in general. Enhancing its form through Mega Evolution would significantly boost Glaceon’s capabilities.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the fundamental designs of the Eeveelutions, each embodying their respective types beautifully. Expanding upon these designs could result in truly captivating concepts. Many fan-created Mega Eeveelution ideas incorporate unused types as secondary typings, and it seems that Glaceon would particularly benefit from an Ice/Poison combination. At present, no other Pokémon possess this type pairing, making it an intriguing prospect to witness on Glaceon. While I’d love to see more Mega Eeveelution variations, the mere thought of Eevee Mega Evolutions is already exhilarating!
