Film industry veteran, Kalle Friz, is set to take on the role of Managing Director for Germany and Austria at Universal Pictures International starting from July.
He is responsible for reporting to Paul Higginson, who holds the position of Executive Vice President for EMEA, and managing the day-to-day activities within one of UPI’s major theatrical markets. His duties encompass sales, distribution, acquisitions, marketing, public relations, and finance.

Paul Higginson, our EMEA executive VP, is who this person will be reporting to. They’ll handle daily operations in one of UPI’s biggest theatrical markets. Their job responsibilities include sales, distribution, acquisitions, marketing, publicity, and finance.
Friz departs from Studiocanal after a 16-year stint, during which he held the position of EVP International Operations & CEO Germany. His responsibilities included overseeing the theatrical and marketing initiatives for various English-language releases like the Paddington trilogy, The Hunger Games, Saw franchises, La La Land and Back To Black, as well as local productions such as Heidi, The Little Witch, Woodwalkers and Balloon. Now, he’s moving on to UPI.
Prior to his tenure at Studiocanal, Friz was in charge of Fox Searchlight and local acquisitions between 2002 and 2009. During this period, he supervised the German distributions of films such as “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Juno,” “28 Days Later,” and “Black Swan.
Higginson stated that Kalle is an experienced professional in our field who is well-known for his creative distribution methods and deep understanding of the German market. He is also a dedicated leader who motivates his team. With more than two decades of experience, we are delighted to welcome Kalle to help develop fresh growth strategies for our local market and strengthen our standing in this region.
Starting on Wednesday, Hooman Afshari and Lutz Rippe have been appointed as the new co-CEOs of Studiocanal Germany, a position they’ll be taking over from Friz. They were previously named co-managing directors of the group in 2023.
