In an unexpected announcement, Sinclair Broadcast Group has revealed that seasoned Amazon executive Jeff Blackburn will assume the roles of Chairman and CEO at Tennis Channel.
Previously, Blackburn had been in charge of all of Amazon’s entertainment and video initiatives, having joined the company soon after its initial public offering (IPO) in 1998, where he also worked as a banker. Under his guidance, properties such as Prime Video, Amazon Studios, Twitch, and Amazon Music were launched and managed. During his tenure, Amazon entered the world of football with its Thursday Night Football deal, and made a significant acquisition of MGM.
He retired from the tech giant in 2022, and also joined the board of Roku in 2023.
Now, he intends to launch a revamped version of Tennis Channel, as indicated by Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley, suggesting that Blackburn views streaming services and direct-consumer access as a significant opportunity.
Jeff’s appointment represents a significant advancement in our plan to boost Tennis Channel’s development and tap into Sinclair’s long-term wealth. Ripley made this statement. Jeff has a history of fostering innovation and expanding large media companies, so he brings the strategic perspective and operational skills needed to increase our digital presence, improve audience interaction, and profit from global sports and streaming market trends. His guidance will be crucial as we aim to broaden Tennis Channel’s distribution and enhance its direct-to-consumer offerings, ultimately establishing Tennis Channel as a global, 24/7 hub for tennis fans across all screens and platforms.
Blackburn remarked, ‘Tennis Channel is a valuable gem in the sports world.’ It’s adored by tennis enthusiasts, opening up promising avenues for growth in streaming and innovative endeavors such as Pickleball. As someone who has always harbored a deep love for tennis since my youth, I am excited to embark on this new journey and become part of this exceptional team.
Among all television networks, Tennis Channel offers the most live tennis broadcasts. However, when it comes to the major Grand Slam tournaments, networks such as ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery Sports are also highly sought after by tennis players.
