Bryce Dallas Howard & Orlando Bloom in ‘Deep Cover’: Comedy Meets Crime Chaos!

Some individuals enroll in improv lessons to enhance their public speaking abilities, while others are drawn to the camaraderie and the thrilling spontaneity of the act. In the film titled “Deep Cover“, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed, a comedic approach is used to infiltrate London’s criminal underworld. The movie unveiled first-look images last year, and now Amazon has revealed the trailer for this comedy that will premiere on June 1st.

In this movie, we follow a comedy structure known as the rule of threes, where a group of three characters are involved in humorous chaos. Bryce Dallas Howard portrays Kat, an improv instructor with doubts about her past chances at stardom. Orlando Bloom takes on the role of a dedicated method actor who leverages improvisation to perfect his performances and maintain immersion in his roles. Meanwhile, Nick Mohammed plays the relatable character who serves as our entry point into the world of improv, seeking to regain his confidence after hitting tough times. The trio is recruited by a secret agent (Sean Bean) to employ their quick wit to infiltrate criminal circles.

The movie is helmed by Tom Kinglsey, a director who honed his skills on numerous BAFTA-winning BBC TV comedies such as “Ghosts” and “Stath Lets Flats.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kinglsey discussed the film’s cast and their respective characters.

In this portrayal, [Bloom’s character] is fully immersed and his improvisations are unpredictable, which leaves his friends feeling somewhat uneasy. Orlando shows remarkable insight into why the character is amusing and skillfully executes the role by giving it his all. He doesn’t shy away from poking fun at himself…Nick has always been a standout performer. He finds humor in even the smallest, most ordinary things, and this film showcases a wealth of impressive improvisation on his part.

The New Era of Action Comedy

Over the past decade, it’s been a joy to witness the rise and popularity of comedic blockbusters that catapulted stars like Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride into household names. However, since the late 2010s, it seems we’ve entered an era where laughter is scarce in our cinematic landscape. Many films hailed as the best comedies of the past five years are more somber dramadies than outright comedies.

As a fan, I eagerly anticipate our return to full-throttle comedy, and I believe it will come through creative genre blends, similar to the style seen in films like “Hot Fuzz” or the upcoming “Naked Gun” reboot starring Liam Neeson. This unique blend of humor with other genres could be just what we need to bring back the laughs!

The screenplay for “Deep Cover” is penned by the writing duo Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, who have collaborated on the Jurassic World film series. They also joined forces with Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, popularly known as The Pin, to develop the script. Apart from Howard, Bloom, and Mohammed, the movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Ian McShane, Paddy Considine, and Sonoya Mizuno.
