Lorde Is “So Grateful” for Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ and “Girl, So Confusing” Remix: “It Gave Me a Kick” of Inspiration for New Album

Lorde wasn’t kidding when she said she rides for Charli xcx. 

Last year, the artist behind “What Was That” unveiled their song “Brat,” which later led to a popular collaboration on the remix of “Girl, so confusing.” This sparked excitement for their upcoming album, “Virgin,” as it provided a boost in momentum.

During an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders on Wednesday, the New Zealand singer-songwriter explained that the release of Charli’s album, ‘Brat,’ served as a catalyst for him. It pushed him to refine and clarify his own work because Charli had already so brilliantly established the essence of ‘Brat.'”

In “Girl, so confusing,” originally, Charli alludes to her relationship (or lack thereof) with the two-time Grammy winner, a connection that followed years of their being frequently compared. Yet, they seemingly resolved their issues in the remix version, an instance Lorde described as a display of “raw vulnerability” that is now influencing her latest creative endeavors.

Lorde stated that through her music, she had been trying to convey things quite directly. However, Brat was also doing something similar from a different perspective. Working together on the remix and connecting in a raw, exposed way resonated with both of them. This shared vulnerability seemed to strike a chord with their audience.

Despite Brat’s triumph, it sparked a creative surge in me. “I’ve been having similar conversations with fellow gamers,” I found myself saying. “It’s quite disheartening, but I’m incredibly thankful for her.

Ever since their remix was released, Lorde has been teaming up with Charli to perform that track during her Brat tour and during Coachella’s opening weekend a few weeks ago. In a recent interview with Document, the singer of “Green Light” expressed it as a dream come true, performing the surprise show alongside her friend.

Charli was engrossed in play, and I casually strolled onto the grass, feeling a sense of profound realization, as if this moment encapsulated everything one could hope their work experience would be. She expressed this sentiment, followed by her admiration for Charli’s entire entourage, implying her enjoyable time spent with fellow surprise performers Billie Eilish and Troye Sivan.

By observing Charli and spending time with her, I realized that our tasks are important, but they should also be enjoyable, and we need to feel connected and create unique moments that only we share. She mentioned that it was cool to hang out with them, sharing simple moments like sitting on the grass after eating less-than-perfect pizza.
