Highlights for May on Netflix include Vince Vaughn managing to open an Italian restaurant with grandmas, the latest collection of animated tales exploring love, death, and robots, a stylish limited series featuring Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore, the last season of Netflix’s longest-running adult animated show, another movie in the popular Fear Street film series, and the live broadcast of Netflix’s highly anticipated global pop culture and fan event.
In May, Vince Vaughn and Susan Sarandon lead the cast of “Nonnas,” one of Netflix’s major feature releases. This fact-based comedy, directed by Stephen Chbosky (known for “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”), begins streaming on May 9. The film tells the story of Joe Scaravella, who decides to change his life by opening an Italian restaurant that employs Italian grandmothers as chefs, affectionately referred to as “nonnas.” This concept is inspired by the real-life Scaravella, owner of Staten Island’s Enoteca Maria and author of the 2015 cookbook “Nonna’s House.” The cast also features Linda Cardellini, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello, and Campbell Scott.
Beginning May 15th, the fourth installment of Netflix’s adult-oriented animated anthology series “Love & Death and Robots” will be available for streaming. This captivating series, produced by Tim Miller, known for directing “Deadpool,” and overseen by David Fincher, delves into various genres including comedy, horror, and science fiction, all intertwined with themes of love, death, and robots. The fourth volume consists of 10 short episodes and boasts directors such as Fincher (“Can’t Stop”), Miller (“Golgotha” and “The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur”), Jennifer Yuh Nelson (“Spider Rose”), Patrick Osborne (“Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners” and “The Other Large Thing”), and Robert Valley (“400 Boys”). Since its debut in March 2019 with volume one, the popularity of each installment of “Love, Death & Robots” has been on a steady upward trajectory, with volume three earning a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This month, the highly-anticipated drama series “Sirens” from Netflix will debut on May 22nd. Created by Molly Smith Metzler, who also brought us “Maid,” this star-studded limited series revolves around a woman searching for her younger sister, who has mysteriously found herself entangled in the peculiar life of a wealthy family. The ensemble cast includes Oscar winner Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Kevin Bacon, and Glenn Howerton. “Sirens” is an adaptation of Metzler’s play “Elemeno Pea,” which she wrote during her time at Juilliard. This project marks the first output from the overall deal Metzler secured with Netflix following the success of “Maid.
Beginning on May 23rd, the last season of the popular animated show “Big Mouth” will debut on Netflix. This series focuses on a gang of middle school students, including friends Nick Birch and Andrew Glouberman (portrayed by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney), who grapple with the most awkward problems typical for their age group. As it concludes its run, the Emmy-winning adult-animated comedy will surpass all other scripted series in terms of length on Netflix.
On the 23rd of May, the latest installment in Netflix’s “Fear Street” movie series, titled “Fear Street: Prom Queen“, is set to premiere. This film, set in the 80s, is based on R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel “The Prom Queen” and features India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, Ariana Greenblatt, Chris Klein, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston in the main roles. The film is helmed by director Matt Palmer, with Donald Mcleary contributing to the script as well. Previously, Netflix had released a successful trilogy of “Fear Street” films in 2021, which were directed by Leigh Janiak: “Fear Street Part One: 1994“, “Fear Street Part Two: 1978“, and “Fear Street Part Three: 1666“.
