‘Redwood,’ Starring Idina Menzel, Posts Closing Notice Following Tonys Snub

Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, is ending its run after being snubbed by the Tony Awards.

The Nederlander Theatre’s production of the musical, initially launched on February 13, will now conclude on May 18. This production, masterfully directed by Tina Landau with music composed by Kate Diaz and lyrics penned by both Diaz and Landau, is the first to announce its closure following the announcement of the Tony nominations on Thursday. This suggests that the show had been relying heavily on the nomination and potential win to boost its success.

The musical that started at Nederlander Theatre on February 13 will end on May 18. It’s directed by Tina Landau, with music by Kate Diaz and lyrics by both of them. Since the Tony nominations were announced on Thursday, it has become the first show to announce its closure, indicating it was hoping for a nomination or win to help it continue.

The series chronicles Menzel’s character, a mourning mother, who ventures into the forest and ascends a towering redwood tree as a means of dealing with her sorrow.

The performance of the show garnered both mediocre and unfavorable assessments, yet it secured a “Critic’s Choice” recognition from The New York Times. Notably, the box office revenue for Redwood has been declining since its debut, and it filled only three-quarters of its seats last week.

At closing, the musical will have played 127 performances, including 17 preview performances. 

Although we had wished for a longer run, we’re incredibly thankful to have shared such a beautiful tale during the time granted to us,” producers Eva Price and Caroline Kaplan expressed. “Redwood has been a deeply cherished project since its inception, and we are enormously proud of the exceptional efforts our cast, crew, and creative team have devoted to this production. The themes of bonding and camaraderie have struck a chord with viewers, and these sentiments will stay with us even after the show concludes on Broadway.

Apart from Menzel, the stellar cast of Redwood features De’Adre Aziza, Michael Park, Zachary Noah Piser, and Khaila Wilcoxon. Joining them are Daniel Brackett, John Hemphill, Veronica Otim, and Jessica Phillips as well.
