This studio is well-known among movie enthusiasts due to its consistently creative and thrilling film productions each year. It’s projected to launch an impressive fifteen new movies in 2025 alone. The films that initially put this studio on the map remain iconic for good reason.
One of the standout traits of these films lies in their ability to be watched multiple times. While knowing movie spoilers can sometimes lessen a film’s impact, it seems that many A24 productions challenge this notion. There are numerous instances where these studio’s movies remain captivating even when viewers already know the outcome.
Hereditary (2018)
“Hereditary” stands out as one of today’s most unsettling films. It immerses audiences in a symbolic haunted mansion, where the Graham family grapples with unrelenting sorrow and supernatural terrors for two hours straight. The movie is hard to stomach, and despite repeated viewings, the surprises and frights remain potent.
Upon another viewing, viewers of the movie can spot details they missed initially. The movie Hereditary, with its intricate use of metaphor and storytelling, doesn’t give away what’s coming next easily. On the contrary, spoilers enhance the experience of watching Hereditary. This haunting film manages to maintain its chilling effect even after multiple viewings.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Regardless of what viewers might already know about the Safdie Brothers’ film, they are fully immersed in the whirlwind life of Howard, a jeweler, as he takes daring gambles with other people’s funds throughout the movie. From the very beginning to the end, the audience is captivated by the raw talent and elegance displayed on screen, instantly becoming enamored with it.
The story in “Uncut Gems” offers numerous unexpected plots that could be ruined, but even knowing what’s coming, fans can’t help but find the same level of enjoyment. Despite potential spoilers, the movie is incredibly engaging, with stunning cinematography, flawless performances, and a thrilling vibe that makes it feel like a gamble no matter the outcome.
Midsommar (2019)
The movie is vividly painted with striking visuals, spine-chilling rituals, intricate character interactions and narratives, and a multitude of unsettling scenes. Yet, it doesn’t diminish the delight of watching as an audience may not necessarily comprehend why it’s so fearful or captivating. Ari Aster skillfully constructs a mesmerizing, daylight-filled terror in which the tension grows not from unexpected events, but from the unavoidable destiny of the entire scenario.
Anticipating a movie’s surprises makes its impact even stronger since you can follow the entire narrative arc more clearly. So, while viewers should go into “Midsommar” not knowing what to expect, knowing potential spoilers in advance won’t diminish the film’s brilliance one bit.
X (2022)
In my opinion, “X” is a chilling masterpiece penned and brought to life by the talented Ti West, harkening back to the golden age of slasher films, such as the iconic “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” By cleverly blending nostalgia with modern horror elements, this film crafts an engaging tale that resonates deeply with contemporary audiences. As a group of adult filmmakers decide to temporarily inhabit an eerie barn for their latest project, they are unaware that the elderly residents who dwell there are determined to bring an end to their own dark careers.
In essence, the most significant surprises viewers may encounter from X likely stem from the many gruesome and exhilarating kill scenes depicted within the film. While learning exactly which characters meet their grisly end might diminish some of the enjoyment, slasher films are known for their captivating kill sequences. If spectators knew what kind of death scenes they were in store for before watching the movie, it wouldn’t necessarily ruin the experience, as this is a common element in many terrifying horror movies that fall under the same genre.
The Iron Claw (2023)
The movie titled “The Iron Claw” might seem less tragic compared to the actual events, surprisingly so. However, it’s based on truly heart-wrenching real-life incidents that continue to bewilder the professional wrestling community. This film narrates the story of the esteemed Von Erich wrestling family, where viewers will witness a series of unfortunate incidents befall their wrestlers.
Throughout this distressing period in their family lineage, they bore some colossal names. Understanding the true events doesn’t lessen the pleasure or curiosity of watching this movie. In fact, knowing the historical context behind these sorrowful incidents intensifies the emotional impact of the film. Essentially, _The Iron Claw_ is a compelling and melancholic portrayal of wrestling lore that remains potent even with familiarity.
Past Lives (2023)
In two lives predestined to intertwine, they unknowingly missed each other throughout their lives. If circumstances had been different and their paths crossed more frequently, there could have been a chance for romance. But in this story, the protagonist, portrayed by Greta Lee, and the viewers will come to terms with the fact that this destined love is beyond repair. The sad reality of their unfulfilled connection will undoubtedly move even those who know the film’s ending, leaving no one with a dry eye.
In the movie “Past Lives,” you won’t find numerous major plot twists to surprise audiences, except for who Lee’s character ultimately chooses as her partner. In a typical romantic film, there might be an argument for her to abandon her loyal and contented husband and rekindle her relationship with her old flame. However, the movie takes an unexpected yet fulfilling turn, leaving viewers pondering over its poignant and satisfying ending for quite some time.
Pearl (2022)
Following the extraordinary triumph of X, Mia Goth and screenwriter-director Ti West were given a captivating chance to develop and bring about a follow-up film. Remarkably, not only had this duo already devised a plan for a sequel, but they had even filmed it and it was all set to premiere. Pearl delves into the chilling, violent backstory of the infamous character.
Just like the original film X, viewers can dive into Pearl without fear of missing crucial details. Interestingly, the movie assumes its audience is well-versed with the characters and their eventual fates within the storyline. In essence, Pearl serves as a compelling sequel to X, captivating audiences who have grown fond of it. Pearl isn’t just an enjoyable movie but also introduces a chilling modern horror villain that sets the tone for this era.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Originally penned by Sarah DeLappe and helmed by Halina Reijn, this movie takes the traditional mystery genre and spins it on its axis. Unlike conventional murder mysteries, Bodies Bodies Bodies offers a unique spin on the “whodunnit” concept, challenging established tropes and norms.
The film boasts an extensive ensemble cast, featuring Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott, Pete Davidson, among others. Set within a mansion during a hurricane, it unfolds the unconventional murder mystery of several young friends who find themselves trapped in the house.
In the realm of cinematic experiences, few films can match the exhilarating rollercoaster ride that is “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” As a movie critic, I’ve watched countless movies, and this one stands out as a delightful conundrum that keeps you guessing from start to finish. The visual spectacle is electrifying, and the quick-witted humor adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Simply put, it’s impossible not to have a fantastic time immersed in its world.
Zola (2020)
Zola likely originates from one-of-a-kind sources of inspiration: a popular Twitter thread that spread rapidly due to the extraordinary narrative it presented. A24 breathes life into this story under the direction and writing of Janicca Bravo, resulting in a film as daring as it is unpredictable. Taylour Paige and Riley Keough guide viewers on an exhilarating rollercoaster ride, with a remarkable performance from one of them.
Discovering the plot ahead of time doesn’t diminish the movie’s enjoyment; on the contrary, it heightens the anticipation. The journey is so exhilarating that it’s hard to believe it’s real life. Fortunately, this concept was transformed into a fantastic film, and Zola, or @Zola, has been unfairly overlooked and deserves more recognition.
I Saw The TV Glow (2024)
Despite the audience knowing the movie’s ending, the film “I Saw the TV Glow” offers a compelling and immersive journey that primarily focuses on evoking emotions rather than reaching a specific story conclusion. Director Jane Schoenbrun skillfully creates an eerie ambiance and setting that make the movie more than just a predictable narrative. Instead of being driven by a straightforward plot, the film’s power lies in its haunting atmosphere and dreamlike environment.
I Saw The TV Glow” is a movie that might provide a richer viewing experience if viewers are already familiar with its storyline. By coming in with some prior knowledge, audiences may appreciate the subtle and profound symbolism and fully immerse themselves in the dreamlike, pastel-colored environments depicted on screen. Regardless of how many times one watches it, the movie offers enjoyment and insight.
