Maggie and Negan return for another installment set amidst the zombie-ridden New York City in “The Walking Dead: Dead City”. The season 2 opener finds them collaborating to rekindle the city’s lights, with methane playing a crucial role. This precious resource, derived from decomposing walkers, is highly sought after during the apocalypse and has brought New Babylon right to their doorstep.
Prior to the crusade against methane getting underway, life at the Bricks community, where Maggie resides, is generally stable, save for the impending concern that colder weather may lead to diminishing crop yields in the future. However, there’s a palpable sense that Maggie could be the guiding force this community needs during challenging times, a fact not lost on Hershel and Ginny. Unfortunately, they seem oblivious to this reality.
Ginny, who was notably quiet in Season 1, is now opening up more, though her disposition remains melancholic. There’s a growing emotional rift between Maggie and Hershel, a divide that has widened since his return home. Hershel harbors a secret from New York, hinted at by the missing toe he incurred during the Dama’s attack. Despite her curiosity, Maggie chooses not to probe, nor does Hershel disclose his pain.
New Babylon Makes an Unannounced Visit to the Bricks
Maggie continually works to bridge the gap between herself and her teenage son. She shares an old tale of their past, when they had a plan for reuniting if ever separated. A beaming Hershel, around five or six years old, was displayed by his mother as he exhibited a firefly he had caught, causing both of them to grin. This is quite uncharacteristic for the grim anti-hero, Hershel, who has spent a year in captivity in New York. His meals consist of cockroaches, and he resides in a jail cell. However, there’s a silver lining – he’s formed bonds with a local violinist who serenades him with calming melodies as amusement.
The New Babylon Federation arrives at the Bricks’ residence, resembling notorious old Western lawbreakers prepared to apprehend rogues. Following this encounter, Maggie is compelled to integrate with New Babylon’s network of settlements due to the federation severing all trading ties for the Bricks. Given her tireless efforts in Season 11 of The Walking Dead to establish Hilltop’s autonomy from the Commonwealth, Maggie’s resentment towards New Babylon’s orders is understandable. The delegates sent by New Babylon are Governor Charlie Byrd, Major Lucia Narvaez, and Colonel Perlie Armstrong (now promoted). As Perlie explains using grandiose language, New Babylon intends to conscript soldiers from various communities for an “exploratory expedition” in New York City with the aim of restoring Manhattan to its pre-apocalypse state.
Maggie and her fellow Bricks members are understandably worried due to the treaty they were coerced into signing, which includes military conscription. Narvaez uses a public execution as a warning to anyone who tries to avoid being drafted. Yet this is supposed to be the federation that aims to restore America’s former grandeur. Meanwhile, Negan faces a difficult situation. Infiltrators on the mainland have informed the Croat and the Dama about their plans, and they aim to stop them with an army – a problem since they don’t actually possess one.
The strategy is to engage with three powerful, territorial factions within the city, whom the Croat refers to affectionately as such, to establish an alliance. Dama believes that by demonstrating a strong, intimidating presence, Negan can convince them. However, Negan appears uninterested. Given his circumstances, it’s understandable – these aren’t his people, and this isn’t his city. His primary concerns are his wife and son. So, similar to how she handled Hershel, Dama uses his family as leverage. And as expected, his family becomes the motivator that brings him back into action.
Perlie and Maggie Make a Controversial Compromise
At the Bricks, Hershel listens in as Pierce, New Babylon’s historian, tries to persuade folk that the mission is valuable despite the danger. However, Hershel vehemently opposes this viewpoint. Whereas Pierce believes New York’s restoration can restore its former beauty and art, Hershel advocates for acceptance of its loss. The youngster is captivated merely by contemplating the extent of its destruction. Essentially, he echoes Dama’s sentiments.
In advance, Perlie alerts Maggie that he plans to propose her enlistment to Charlie, seeing as she’s familiar with city life and combat. However, Maggie recognizes the true nature of this task. It’s not about rebuilding the city; it’s about seizing control over the methane operation. The cornfields are plagued by moths, causing issues in ethanol production, and New Babylon can’t survive without fuel. In the long term, they hope to recoup technology and medicine. He maintains they’re on the same side; he too harbors doubts about New Babylon. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have fabricated the story of killing Negan. But she feels expendable in their eyes.
The only concession Maggie is willing to make is that she will step forward and volunteer for enlistment herself, so that no one else from the Bricks has to go.
Negan and the Croat connect with citizens from New York in a market-like setting during the apocalypse – it’s like a farmer’s market, but scarier. People wager on battles against walkers inside an arena, with the colossal competitor resembling Bruegel’s giant. Meanwhile, Charlie suggests evaluating Maggie to determine if she’s worthy of 20 soldiers. Narvaez seems skeptical, yet her unwavering loyalty to Charlie makes her inclined to agree with whatever she proposes. However, Hershel is less keen on his mother returning to Manhattan. He believes this decision is driven by Negan and views it as an unfair and disrespectful assessment of her character – a sentiment typical of teenagers.
Negan Takes Back His Old Power as Maggie Proves Hers
After the farmer’s market, Negan makes a grand statement to Bruegel and other city groups. A fellow named Christos meets an electrifying end due to his reluctance to join forces with Negan. Despite years of conflict, these people are hesitant to reconcile at the mere suggestion from a man wielding a bat. However, the allure of electricity seems compelling.
In a turn of events, Maggie finds herself under scrutiny from Hershel and Ginny. While Hershel confronts her with suspicion that she returned to Manhattan due to Negan, either because of guilt for leaving him behind or because she still harbors feelings for him, it’s actually Ginny who’s pursuing Negan, apparently seeking revenge for her father. Despite Maggie’s attempts to keep Ginny from going, the young girl asserts her independence by reminding Maggie that she’s not her mother. The conversation between Maggie and Hershel shifts to a drawing of the Dama, which holds significant meaning for him. He tries to brush it off as just a woman from a billboard, but they share a heartfelt moment as Maggie vows to continue their relationship once she returns. As Maggie and Ginny depart from the Bricks for their mission, Hershel smiles at a drawing depicting Manhattan in ruins.
