Did you know Alia Bhatt led Highway’s THIS popular song was recorded after being shot? Imtiaz Ali reveals deets

In an interesting revelation about the movie-making process, Director Imtiaz Ali disclosed that for the movie ‘Highway’, featuring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda in lead roles (released in 2014), they filmed the popular song ‘Patakha Guddi’ before it was even recorded. The film told the story of a woman who discovers freedom after being kidnapped, with its music, particularly ‘Patakha Guddi’, significantly enhancing the overall appeal of the movie.

In a recent conversation with O2 India, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali revealed an intriguing detail about the song “Patakha Guddi”. He stated that they filmed the song prior to it being composed and recorded by AR Rahman. This is quite unusual for the making of this particular tune.

They based their filming on a track called “Jugni” by the late Gurmeet Bawa, who received the Padma Bhushan award. Specifically, they filmed an entire song using “Jugni” as a reference, playing it on a recorder during production.

After the visuals were finalized, AR Rahman developed a brand-new melody. Imtiaz shared, “AR Rahman sir had a concept in mind for the kind of song suitable for this. He composed it and we later reversed the process.” Additionally, he praised lyricist Irshad Kamil, stating, “This is one of the most brilliant songs that Irshad has penned for any of my films.

In his comments, the director pointed out that the song embodies the essence of female power within the Punjabi culture, a theme that seamlessly aligns with the movie’s overall atmosphere. He remarked, “The idea of female energy resonated strongly in this piece, and it fit Highway beautifully.

In a single focused recording, the Nooran Sisters sang tirelessly day and night, capturing Patakha Guddi. Imtiaz Ali remembered that the pair shared the same microphone while AR Rahman, who was out of the country, instructed them via video call on mic placement and vocal delivery.

Besides sharing a humorous incident from the recording session, Imtiaz added that the song lyrics contained the name “Ali,” which prompted the sisters to sing it playfully while looking his way. Jyoti Nooran even indicated him during the chorus, turning the studio experience into an enjoyable and memorable moment.

He continued by commending the lively spirit that the Nooran Sisters infused into the tune, likening it to something nearly divine. In his opinion, AR Rahman had foreseen such a magical touch in his composition, and the end product certainly delivered on that promise.

Made by Sajid Nadiadwala, the movie “Highway” is cherished for its captivating acting, heartfelt narrative, and stirring soundtrack. Among the many memorable tunes from this film, “Patakha Guddi” stands out as a highly acclaimed and iconic song.
