A Second Season of Shōgun is Coming
Approximately a year since negotiations with Clavell’s estate commenced, it’s been announced that the second season of the historical drama is scheduled to start filming in January 2026. It’s also been confirmed that Sanada and Jarvis will reprise their roles as Lord Toranaga and John Blackthorne for this upcoming season. In addition, they will serve as executive producer and co-executive producer of the series respectively.
The Second Season Will Have a Twist
The makers of “Shogun,” Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, have mentioned that the second season will feature a significant time leap. This new installment in the “Shogun” era is set “a decade after the events of the first season.” It will carry on the historically-inspired tale of these two characters from disparate backgrounds whose destinies are intertwined, as described in the official synopsis of the show.
As a passionate movie critic, I eagerly awaited the continuation of the captivating show from last year. Marks and Kondo hinted at more episodes, leaving us intrigued as many plot points were left hanging in Season 1. Among them, the enigma that our protagonist hasn’t yet fully embraced their title role. Frankly, that’s a challenge that history has presented to numerous storytellers before, but what we lack is the guidance of the brilliant source material moving forward. As Marks put it, “there are no roads where we’re going.
Marks stated, “We believe we’ve got something truly intriguing and unexpected.” Filming for Shogun Season 2 commences in January 2026. You can catch the first season now on Hulu.
