On Tuesday, Italian film producer Andrea Iervolino (known for ‘Modì’ and ‘Three Days on the Wing of Madness’) disclosed plans for a U.S.-Italy co-production treaty. This proposed agreement, reportedly endorsed by Mel Gibson, who serves as President Trump’s special envoy to Hollywood, aims to function as a preliminary model for establishing similar agreements worldwide.
The deal intends to motivate Italian filmmakers to create films in the U.S., incorporating American stars and thereby investing in the American economy. Additionally, it proposes that the Italian government initiate initiatives to support productions that foster cultural ties between Italy and the United States.
Gibson and Iervolino couldn’t be immediately contacted for their thoughts.
In a statement, Iervolino, who is known for his bold assertions much like Trump, discussed “estimates” that the global implementation of this model could potentially bring in up to $10 billion per year in direct U.S. investments, although no specific source was provided for these figures.
“The world needs to acknowledge that the American entertainment industry has consistently been at the forefront globally; it continues to serve as the primary benchmark and rule-setter for the industry,” the Italian producer stated. “However, many countries have implemented incentive programs to draw foreign productions and have entered into agreements with multiple nations — but none with the U.S. This has essentially left a significant cultural divide unfilled.
In a positive and optimistic manner, Iervolino stated: “It’s crucial to start a mutually beneficial partnership between the USA and the global community. Mel Gibson and I are actively pursuing this goal, with the hope that such an agreement could serve as a model for other nations worldwide.
Trump shocked the globe, including the stars themselves, when he announced on Truth Social earlier this year that he had appointed new “special representatives” to Hollywood – Gibson, Jon Voight, and Sylvester Stallone as Trump’s “eyes and ears” in the entertainment industry. He stated they would serve as Special Envoys for him, aiming to bring Hollywood, which has lost business to foreign countries over the past four years, back stronger than ever before. This was announced just days before his inauguration.
On Tuesday, Iervolino expressed the intention of formally signing a co-production agreement during the 2025 Venice Film Festival with “the most influential figures” from both industries and governments. The statement suggested that the initial target is Italy, followed by the rest of the world. It signaled that this could mark a significant turning point in global cinema history, potentially bringing success and growth to all participating countries for the first time.
Iervolino did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
