During “Weekend Update,” Michael Che playfully apologized to Scarlett Johansson for his notorious roast beef joke that surfaced in the last episode of Saturday Night Live’s 50th season.
At the start of his comedy segment, Che joked with a playful tone about apologizing to Scarlett Johansson, whom he had offended during their previous joke-swap with her husband Colin Jost. He humorously recalled an inappropriate joke he made about comparing her to Costco roast beef. He then invited her to step forward and address the issue.
Last December, during a “Weekend Update” segment, I heard my husband mentioning that Costco might take off their delicious roast beef sandwich from their menu. But hey, no biggie for me! Ever since our little one arrived, I’ve been indulging in roast beef sandwiches every night. This joke, penned by Che, had Scarlett Johansson looking surprised as Jost said it.
He admitted that his reaction was due to feelings of jealousy. He’s never had the opportunity to witness a human female anatomy in person, though he clarified that he has seen other species, as he once spent a summer on a farm.
Prior to Johansson resuming her hosting duties on Saturday Night Live, she vowed to retaliate against Che over his roast beef joke by giving him a good roasting in return.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, I found myself surrounded by cameras, something I wasn’t prepared for. “You guys are acting just like seventh or eighth graders,” I remarked. It felt like they had pushed me to a point where I needed to respond. Payback, in my opinion, was inevitable.
In this segment, Che playfully remarked, “I’m sorry to you too, Jost, because I owe you a great deal,” a line that appeared to be penned by his fellow host.
When Colin stumbled upon me, I was peddling crack on the street, joked Che playfully. “I’ve cracked up audiences with countless jokes on ‘Update’, earning countless chuckles, but I’ve never uttered the three words that hold the greatest significance: I love you.
