Are The Simpsons Main Voice Cast Truly Irreplaceable?

Since the show first aired in the 1980s, the voices of its main cast members have become closely linked to their characters. Yet, due to certain characters being recast within the series, some viewers may question whether this could potentially occur with one of the primary actors.

For thirty-six seasons, the original voice actors for the Simpsons family – Dan Castellaneta as Homer, Julie Kavner as Marge, Nancy Cartwright as Bart, and Yeardley Smith as Lisa – have remained consistent. Similarly, the show’s key supporting characters are also voiced by their original cast members: Harry Shearer (Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner) and Hank Azaria (Chief Wiggum, Moe, Professor Frink).

In a recent interview, showrunner Matt Selman was questioned about the prospect of the main characters in the show continuing after their current voice actors finish portraying them. He acknowledged that this could potentially be a significant challenge he’d rather not contemplate, as he isn’t sure how his team would manage such a situation. Although characters like Kermit the Frog from The Muppets have been voiced by different actors in the past, Selman emphasized that fans are usually able to notice the change, resulting in a less authentic experience once recasting occurs.

He mentioned he’s not concerned about global threats to the show. Instead, his focus is on whether Jim Brooks and Matt Groening will approve of our table read coming up on Thursday. Of course, if something happens to Hank Azaria like getting attacked by a bear this weekend, it would be quite a problem. We’d certainly face some difficulties then. Just remember to carry your bear spray, Hank, as I wouldn’t want anything unfortunate to happen to you.

Selman went on, “No one can replicate them. Has any other Kermit ever sounded like Kermit? They might search the world for Kermits or host an annual global Kermit talent competition to find the best one, but it’ll never have Jim Henson’s unique sound. Consequently, if one of our performers were attacked by a bear, it would never sound the same again. It would always be a distinct change.

Some Supporting Characters Have Been Recast

Previously, certain character transitions occurred that weren’t a result of an actor’s demise. For instance, when Phil Hartman (Troy McClure, Lionel Hutz) and Marcia Wallace (Mrs. Krabappel) passed away, their characters were retired and not replaced by other actors. More recently, Pamela Hayden (Milhouse) stepped down from voice acting, leading to a recast.

Due to heightened awareness about white actors portraying diverse roles in recent times, certain changes have been made. This resulted in Dan Castellaneta (Azaria) stepping down from voicing Carl Carlson, with Alex Désert taking over the role; and Kevin Michael Richardson assumed Dr. Hibbert’s voice from Harry Shearer.

The Simpsons is streaming on Hulu with past seasons on Disney+.
